I know it's not really Arch related but does anyone know why I'm having this issue with Opera?
Running XFCE4, Opera 10.01. I've tried upgrading to the newest version but getting same problems... the reason for me keeping the older version is system freezing problems with Operea 10.10.
I have a similar Arch setup at home but having zero problems.
Thanks.

Have you tried adjusting Operas' fonts [ Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Fonts ] ?

Hi Deej, no I haven't - it's difficult to access the preferences menu, but I'll give it a try and revert.

Ah, of course I didn't think of that

But the funny thing is I didn't change the default fonts in Opera, except for size.

So, before you altered the font size, the fonts were OK ?
Deej
[EDIT]
I'd delete my ~/.opera directory + restart / re-install opera

The fonts were okay before and after the font (for web) size change.
It must have been an update related to font rendering that broke Opera. It's just a wild guess.
I will try your tip on Monday. Thanks.

Hi,
Deleting .opera and reinstalling Opera doesn't solve the problem.
I will abandon Opera. ^^

Just a quicky - are you installing Opera from AUR or direct from the Opera site ?

Hi Deej, I don't use AUR...

Mmm... direct from Opera... odd it doesn't work.
Arch set-up at work - problems
Similar Arch set-up at home - no problems
Mmmm... I love these problems, but as you are working, tinkering
is probably out of the question. Konqueror here we come

Yeah, I agree it's totally weird. The only major difference that exist between Arch@home and Arch@work is that in addition to XFCE on both I also have Gnome in Arch@Work.
I'll look into Midori or Konqueror to replace the fast and neat Opera. ^^
Thanks for your help.

Hello new2arch, Greets deej. I just installed the latest opera on another box, and -if- it's helpfull, I can walk you through the unreadable menus.
opera version 10.10
pacman reports it as opera 10.10-2. I installed it from AUR, though that shouldn't make a difference (did you jail it? Does that even matter?).
I see from the pic that you can read your top level menus. The following is good for as far back as I can remember (opera 9.64 verified, don't quote me on the rest).
In the Tools menu, Preferences is the last submenu item.
In the Preferences dialog, the last tab to the right will be 'advanced'.
Fonts is the fifth 'catagory' on the left (second one in the second box down (if you can see the boxes).
On the right hand side, the bottom button is for 'international fonts'. The edit box above it is for 'minimum font size' (just below the big box where you actually select the font).
EDIT! very bad typo... the big box above is a catagory box with things like "Browser menus" and the like. The button to the right allows you to select the font.
Clicking there, hitting backspace and delete several times, and then typing in the old size may help.
The 'OK' button is hilighted by default, so hitting enter should work. There is no "apply" button.
Hope that helps.... If I'm way off base it might be usefull to know where in opera you went to change the fontsize, 'cause the above is the only place I see.
Good luck, I'll check back on this one tomorrow sometime.
laters,
b
ps. On my mainbox I have an older version of opera installed and it is jailed under ~. I DL'd it from the site and installed it using the supplied directions, and it lives in my home dir but I've had no trouble with font's and the like. Works great. I'm running 64bit, and the latest opera 64bit is completely useless on my main box. The other box I mentioned (opera 10.10) above is a 32bit box.

Hi, eilenbeb, thanks for your efforts. I could access the font choice menu, but altering font size or font type don't solve the problem.

Sorry, new2arch. Those were my only ideas. BTW I was editing my post when you posted. I'll check back in a few but from the sounds of it, you've got something else going on...

Yes, I suspect it's something else other than Opera itself.

On my 32bit system running opera 10.10 I have (gcc 4.4.2-3) (gcc-libs 4.4.2-3) (qt 4.5.3-3)
Reading though the PKGBUILD from the AUR I don't see anything else of note. No other deps or build-deps.
There are some pixmap refs, you could check for pixmap support. Many of opera's submenus have 'icons' and the lack of them could be trouble...
I'm grasping at straws, of course.
As an extreem, you could do a pacman -Qs on both @home and @work, pipe them into files, and use a diff to see what @work is missing/different....

Hello,
RE gcc, gcc-libs, gt - I have the newest versions.
The Pixmap and other tip, those are beyond my ability. :-D
Thanks anyway. I will try to find a replacement.

Opera uses qt, dillo uses fltk2.
Digging through the dependencies, the both rely on:
libjpeg
libpng
libxrender
fontconfig
libxext
... and probably more.
You could try re-installing the above? Might want to drop out of X first.
