can't backup via eth0

Hi group,

Just starting out. Downloaded and booted usb image on 900A EEEpc. Before I can begin however I must backup to my desktop via eth0 on a LAN. I also must copy from my desktop all my ppp info so I can connect using  dialup. I've set up ifconfig eth0 and route on both machines. Both machines can ping each other but I can't copy using sftp,  ftp or scp. ssh doesn't work either. Always the same error message: connection refused on port 22. Whichever machine I use. I've edited /etc/ssh/sshd_config on both machines, basically to allow everything without checking for permissions or passwords. Security is *not* and issue. I've tried Port 2222 and Port 443. No change.

OK fixed -- I just rebooted one of the machines and I was able to use ssh from it to the other. Something about keys, I think, need to look further there.
