New Arch Linux installation script

Hello Arch,

I'm thinking to a new installation script for Arch Linux and I propose one similar with the debian installer.
I want to know if that is a good idea or just a waste of time smile.

Thanks for the feedback

Re: New Arch Linux installation script

Arch is not a newbie friendly distribution installation-wise and my bet is that it will never become that. I certainly do not hope so. AIF is a brilliant piece of installer-software IMO.

Re: New Arch Linux installation script

I think I have only seen AIF once when I had to reinstall when my laptop died. I can't recall when I last installed on my desktop. I was pretty impressed with it especially with the disk setup options.

Let me disagree. I'm new to Arch. I have much expirience in gentoo. Gentoo does not have an install script at all, everything is done by hands according to gentoo handbook. I faced some unresolvable problems during net install. Connection stucked and some packed couldn't be fetched. Due to this i was made to start install process from the start. I was trying to continue the install process, but the 'brilliant piece' does not allow to skip some steps and continue with installing packages.
Aif also ignores "back" buttons during install process.

So, why are you here whining and not back building Gentoo by hand? Instead of complaining on the forums it would be more productive to file a bugreport here: http://bugs.archlinux.org/proj6?do=index

If some packages weren't fetched, that seems that you picked a bad mirror. You should choose a more reliable one. https://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorStatus

Re: New Arch Linux installation script

he has a point though, it's small issues like those that can make the install a pain for new users. but the best approach is indeed to file bugreports for aif.  About the mirror stuff, we're reworking the sync scripts, and a more reliable mirror helps also.  But aif could handle this more gracefully.
