Laptop fans stopped working after todays update, pc keeps overheating

So I was trying to play a dvd and no player would work (tried multiple dvd's) so I did an -Syu, and my fans completely stopped working, Compaq c700 1 year old, arch 64 gnome.  Oddly the fan doesnt work when i reboot (before arch or grub load) either.

I said screw it and enabled the testing repo and did another full -Syu and got 50 or 60 megs of updates, but no luck, though these updates bring some nice minor improvements.

I have to try to fix this as soon as possible, any suggestions? thanks. the fans always worked fine before.

Check your pacman.log for the list of updates pulled in before you started having the fan issue. The culprit should be in that list.

Re: Laptop fans stopped working after todays update, pc keeps overheating

pacman -Syu doesn't update all the packages on the system but only the ones which have to be, so a list of the updated packages (look in /var/log/pacman.log) may provide us a pointer to the packages which may be the cause of the problem.

Re: Laptop fans stopped working after todays update, pc keeps overheating

This seems to stand out as relevent:

But i set up lm_sensors and followed the wiki's but i'm getting this error:

**********
sudo pwmconfig
# pwmconfig revision 5630 (2009-01-29)
This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)
controls, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on
your motherboard. Note that many motherboards do not have pwm
circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm.

We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls.
The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed
after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you
physically verify that the fans have been to full speed
after the program has completed.

/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed

I dont have any fan related bios options.

I just tried an old ubuntu live cd and the fans still dont work, must be a hardware problem.  is there anything else i can do right now?  do i have to bring it to a repair shop?
