Sdlmame so sound with pulseaudio

I have been using sdlmame with pulseaudio for some time now, but from last month immediately after starting a game the sound starts to stutter heavily then eventually theres no sound at all, and after that when i close sdlmame by hitting escape it never returns to my desktop. I have to switch to a tty then kill the process "sdlmame" which as shown by 'top' was consuming 100% of cpu. Launching from the terminal it says continuously "snd buffer overrun". I'm currently using it by shutting down pulseaudio. Is there any workaround?
