Sony Vaio left mouse click suddenly stopped working

hello,

while working on printing, my fiance's laptop's touchpad's (is that grammatically correct? :) left click suddenly stopped working, and left click will only work sparingly with usb mice.  i honestly have no idea what would have caused this or when it happened exactly.  we were watching some futurama when i suddenly couldnt left click anything.  at first i thought the button went out, but it seems to happen with usb mice also, even though they've worked a few times in my numerous attempts.  if i change to left handed mouse, the primary select (now right click) works fine, but i still cannot left click.

environment is KDE, latest packages as of today (i pulled a handful of packages kde-libs included earlier today...uh oh?).  strangely the usb mouse will suddenly kick in sometimes; i dont know what im doing to make it work at all when it does work.  i was rmmod and modprobing usb/hid modules.  i actually think i only got it working once or twice, because i haven't got it going for the last 20 minutes.

touchpad device is located at /dev/input/event8.  when simply catting the device, i get no feedback from left click, telling me kernel/evdev/X/? is misbehaving?  the usb mouse, on /dev/input/event11, DOES provide feedback, even though its still not honouring left click.  there is also /dev/input/event0 but im not sure what that's linked to...  xev also confirms that a "ButtonPress event" is not being triggered by a left click on either the touchpad or usb mouse.  dont see anything interesting in xorg log, but let me know of anything else that's useful.  xorg.conf is empty, using input hotplugging.

any help appreciated, thanks. (she uses laptop for online classes; i switched the mouse to left-handed for now... but its pretty annoying without the other button, like a mac without an apple key...)
