Archlinux 945GME Intel *Asus EEE 1000HE* Drivers gone bad?

Dear Staff & Users of Archlinux Forums,
I am experiencing problems with my 945GME drivers or so to speak. I can't use anykind of direct rendering with Intel drivers ( xf86-video-intel ). Right now I am using Compiz but I can only use it when it is set at indirect rendering and that works PERFECTLY but when using Direct Rendering on Compiz makes my PC slowdown like crazy it takes like 20 seconds for it to react to just a mouse click.

In windows direct rendering is working fine I can play Warcraft 3 with almost no lagg and Torchlight( Cool game 3D support for Netbooks ). When playing torchlight in wine I get this error so I cant start the game this must mean that something with the drivers or something isnt setup correctly on my pc. ( This game works in wine I tried it on my other PC. )

wine Torchlight.exe

I am not using an xorg.conf right now since it was said that I didnt need one. But I tried with xorg.conf too same error at the game and Direct Rendering wasnt working either.... Here is  the xorg.conf I was trying it with:

Re: Archlinux 945GME Intel *Asus EEE 1000HE* Drivers gone bad?

Are you using KMS? Maybe try that.  I noticed my Intel 945 starting to go south aswell with compiz and a few other issues with dual screens etc., but enabling KMS seems to have cleared it all up and its running great (without xorg.conf).

Re: Archlinux 945GME Intel *Asus EEE 1000HE* Drivers gone bad?

Same on my laptop. I configured KMS according to this guide

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_Graphics

and now everything works great.

Re: Archlinux 945GME Intel *Asus EEE 1000HE* Drivers gone bad?

I noticed similar problems on my intel 945GME chipset, and haven't had much of an increase in performance when using KMS (but I also don't use Compiz), and I lost my backlight control (it might have changed in a recent release of the driver, but I don't know for sure).  However, I did notice a significant increase in performance when running xorg without an xorg.conf file.  If you don't need the xorg file for any specific settings that you can't set elsewhere, I recommend trying to rename xorg.conf to xorg.conf.backup, and seeing if, upon a reboot/restarting of X, your system is just a bit smoother.  If it doesn't help, you can always just rename the file back to xorg.conf.

Also, if you decide to use KMS and lose backlight controls, have a look here (I just found it, but haven't tried it out yet): http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=634562

It seems to be a bit of a hit-and-miss with the backlight.  The new intel drivers fixed it for some, and for others not.  Chances are you'll probably not need it if you haven't noticed any issues with brightness control.  By the way, the first letter of my username is a lowercase "L" tongue not an I, it's a mixture of my initials and last name.

Anyways, glad we could help, and merry christmas to you too.
