Dropbox: read only sharing

Hi,

Is there a way to share (part of) your dropbox content safely with 'general public'? So that anybody could have a look without a password?

Re: Dropbox: read only sharing

I suppose that's what the "Public" folder is all about?

Re: Dropbox: read only sharing

Ouch smile

But an even better ouch here for you - I place a link of whatever folder I want dropbox to have in the local dropbox folder. Yesterday I deleted the link and it immediately wiped out the original folder as well as all the other on the other machines!!! I count my blessings that I had a backup stored elsewhere. But what did I do wrong? It was so easy to destroy everything everywhere smile

Re: Dropbox: read only sharing

How did you remove the symlink? A simple "rm symlink" should not touch the original folder.
You can restore files deleted from your dropbox via their web-interface (link).

Re: Dropbox: read only sharing

Maybe it wasn't a symlink but a hard link.

Re: Dropbox: read only sharing

Well, I opened konqueror, pulled the folder over to the dropbox folder and was given a choice of copy, move or link. I selected link. In my experience links thus created have always been symlinks, but what do I know (see above)! smile

Re: Dropbox: read only sharing

I just realized that I hijacked this thread - apologies, Llama! Was your question answered?

Anyway. I've tried to reproduce my experience - unsuccessfully smile I can't explain what happened, must have done something in a hurry...

Re: Dropbox: read only sharing

Uhm, right...
Sharing a folder read-only is not possible. You can however create a public link from files (or compressed folders) within your "Public" Folder. This is also the only way to share data with non-Dropbox-users.
Refer to their Documentation for more info.
