is there a way to flip the root and stack sides in dwm? ie, the master window will automatically open on the right side, and anything after will stack on the left.
if this is possible, dwm4lyfe
thanks!

I don't think there is a setting for it, but if you're comfortable with C (or even not so much), it shouldn't be too hard to find how the windows are getting placed and swap them around

One of the layouts in nmaster does this - you could probably set it as the default...
/edit Yes: you just set ntile as the first entry in layouts and it stacks to the left of the screen...

jasonwryan: thanks for the heads up on nmaster!
while it's not exactly what i wanted, it'll get the job done until I can look at the source like HashBox mentioned a little closer.
In this current configuration, upon opening a new terminal the screen will then split into 4 even boxes instead of stacking 3 on the left. A quick and dirty fix for sure, but a nice one.
here is a picture of nmaster in use:
PS, can i upload images directly to the board with the [img] tag?

Glad it (sort of) helped. In my install, opening a fourth client in the tag stacks it with the others (ie., on the left of the screen). It only divides the screen into four quadrants if I change the incmaster value...
Not sure about the image question. You could always give it a try and see.

ah well i guess if you set static const int nmaster=3 or more it could get the same effect. by default it's at 2. i'm gonna change it to 4 so it won't start stacking on the 'stack' (right) side til 4 clients fill the master window.
on another note: is it possible to get auto-transparency to work in dwm? i've fiddled with devilspie a little (to no avail) in an attempt to get it to work. i'd rather not have to use gnome-terminal as a default terminal, even though it has easy auto-transparency.

It works fine for me set at 2 - but I haven't played with it as it suits my needs.
I use Urxvt - that gives me transparency. I find it works brilliantly with dwm.

i should just make the switch to urxvt - it's been on the list of things to do. thanks for your help

No problem. Do you want to mark the thread 'solved'?
Cheers

yes i'd say i found a reasonable workaround with nmaster. consider it solved

I know this is old, but I found an actual solution in the suckless patches

I have been seeing reports of this being a old topic, but I do believe this is the rare case where this answer is relevant, albeit 13 years later.
I will, however, take this opportunity to close this thread.
