[SOLVED] A Few Wireless Questions.

I am a relatively new user of Arch, having migrated from Ubuntu after nearly a year with it, and I have some wireless problems with my USB dongle. Using the 'iwconfig' to check my interfaces yields that it is based on the Ralink rt2870 wireless chipset. I am able to use 'iwlist ra0 scan' to successfully scan for wireless networks, but even after typing

iwconfig ra0 essid "_________" key _________

I still cannot connect to my network. It seems to be successful, because there were no prompts, but when I wanted to do a system upgrade, there is no internet connection.

On a side note, may I ask whether the rt73 or the rt2870 chipset is better supported/more stable, as I have 2 working adaptors.

I posted here, as the wiki could not yield any answer.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [SOLVED] A Few Wireless Questions.

After you do the iwconfig command you then need to do: "dhcpcd ra0", to get yourself an IP address.

Re: [SOLVED] A Few Wireless Questions.

This is a WEP encrypted network, right?
And, are you able to connect to it with other computers?

Re: [SOLVED] A Few Wireless Questions.

It is WEP encrypted, yes, and I have not tried connecting it to other computers.

My computer is a Toshiba Tecra M2 laptop that has a 1.5 GHz Pentium M, 512 MB of RAM/memory and a 40 GB HDD.

Re: [SOLVED] A Few Wireless Questions.

rt2870 is still in the kernel's staging dir. rt73 is the better choice.

Re: [SOLVED] A Few Wireless Questions.

But why does dhcp time out for me?

Could be because I use a static ip. gotta check
