SDL applications are painfully slow

I've been using Arch for some time now and by this moment wiki was enough to solve any problem. However now I have that weird thing that games (probably ones that use sdl?) like the tiles version of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and teeworlds run very slowly.

Besides that graphical output seems fine, glxgears give around 270 fps. I have this problem on my new HP notebook with Ati Mobility HD 4300 and ARCH64. This happens both for xf86-video-ati and x85f-video-radeonhd drivers. Adding "nomodeset" or "radeon.modeset=0" to /boot/grub/menu.lst had no impact. Tried using no xorg.conf and manually edited config - no result.

Googling and wiki didn't help, so any advice will be appreciated.

Unforunately, glxgears is not a very good benchmarking tool.  However, with proper 3d acceleration, glxgears usually runs at multiple thousands of fps.  Have you tried setting up the proprietary ati driver yet?  I understand that what you are doing is not 3d, but it may be worth a shot anyway.  If you do stick to the open source driver, have you tried any of the performance tuning options yet?


Tuning performance with xf86-video-ati
By design, xf86-video-ati runs at AGP 1x speed. It is generally safe to modify this. If you notice hangs, try reducing the value or removing the line entirely (you can use values 1, 2, 4, 8).

Thanks for the quick answer.

I've just experemented with perfomance tuning as described in wiki. That didn't help, unfortunately.

I haven't tried the catalyst driver since it requires falling back to previous version of xorg server (1.6 I suppose). Is it worth all the fuss?

I personally own an nvidia card.  But speaking from that perspective, yes, it as absolutely worth all the fuss.  It is impossible for me to play 3d games, and more than the simplest of 2d games without direct rendering.  In any case, there shouldn't be anything that you would miss by downgrading from xorg-server 1.7 to 1.6.  Should be easy enough to find in the arch rollback machine, if you wanna give it a go.  Keep in mind that the xf86-input packages will have to be downgraded also.  xf86-input- kbd, mouse, and evdev oughta do it.  Also, it's all easily undone, seeing how the packages you have installed are the ones in the repo now.  Whatever you choose to do, keep us posted on the outcome.  Good luck!

EDIT: Maybe try changing your default depth to 16?  24 bit depth might be a lot for the software renderer to handle.  Just a thought (guess)

EDIT 2: do you have ati-dri installed? In /var/log/Xorg.0.log, is dri loading correctly?

I've looked at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and it seems that there is a problem with dri. At first dri and dri2 load okay. But then it is disabled for some reason:

(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed to open the DRM

The disabling of dri follows a lot of messages like this:

I do now. This does not help either. I have a feeling that I'm just blindly missing some line in some config or just have to wait for the new version of drivers.

it appears that the hd4300 is not supported by the radeonhd driver, so the proprietary driver might be your best option.  Or you can, like you said, wait for a new driver version to support hardware acceleration on your card.

Downgraded to xorg-server 1.6 and installed catalyst from AUR. This helped, problem solved.

So now I will have to wait for new mesa (and switch to open-source drivers) or new catalyst to go back to xorg-server 1.7
