gdm only shows suspend, restart and shutdown

When I boot up ArchLinux and it goes to gdm, all I see is an icon and under it my hostname. Under it are three buttons: suspend, restart and shutdown. No option for me to log in as my own user. I tried pressing ctrl-alt-f1 but I don't see the shell once I'm there, just a black screen. Help!
