Resolution at boot when screen is off

Hi guys !

I'm using XFCE through LXDM (for those wondering, yes it's already pretty nicely useable, and compared to slim you can reboot/shutdown without loging-in)
I have a Gefore FX 5700 and am using the nvidia binary driver with a CRT monitor.

When I boot it with screen on I get the normal 1280x1024 resolution but when I boot up with the screen off,  the detected resolution is 640x480 hmm

The only solution when I have booted screen off is to re-run X (reboot or login/logout), xrandr -q does not find my resolutions ! It sticks to probing 640x480...

OK, I could always boot with screen on but I'd like rather some king of "fallback mode/resolution" when EDID is not available.
I tried to add "Modes \"1280x1024\"" to my xorg.conf but It symply does not run anymore with it...

Is setting statically my resolution the only solution ? How does KDM/GDM do (On another PC (TFT) without xorg.conf it works, I can boot screen off) ?

Thanks wink
