Arch Box very unstable after huge update

Hi everyone,

Sorry if I'm doubling questions, but I don't know how to perform the search (what to search for).

The problem looks like this. Yesterday, I did a huge update (pacman -Syu) which weighted more than 500MB. After the update and restart of X server (nvidia package was updated, that's why I restarted X), skype wouldn't start (Segmentation fault error), Ario as well (in console: Illegal operation). Wp-tray showed error that it can't start.
Today, after reboot, beside the thing above, it crashes when I press key {enter} few times - as example when I want to submit second, third message in pidgin, last time it crashed when I wanted to post something to forum (when I hit enter, for new line). It receives no interrupts from keyboard nor mouse - mouse isfrost, keyboard dead.

Any idea what could possibly cause the problems?

Thank you in advance,
-- Daniel

Re: Arch Box very unstable after huge update

I'm curious. can you post what packages you upgraded?  you can find this information in the tail of /var/log/pacman.log
this may provide some more clues as to what is going on.

Re: Arch Box very unstable after huge update

Thank you for your replay.

It crashed one more time when I hit {enter} while I was typing one mail (and one more time while I was typing this replay, but this time only X crashed, lucky me...). I'm afraid to hit that key smile keeping it in clipboard big_smile

Re: Arch Box very unstable after huge update

Thought I read something about this in a thread not to long ago.  I did some searching but couldn't find it.  I know someone else posted about this and that there is a fix; I read it here in the Arch forums.  Sorry I can't be more specific.

Re: Arch Box very unstable after huge update

[2009-12-27 19:26] upgraded xorg-server (1.6.3.901-1 -> 1.7.3.901-1)

That may be the cause. Now there is a newer version ( xorg-server 1.7.3.902-1 , updated on 2009-12-28 ). Can you try to upgrade after checking if your mirror is in sync with the latest. I had same problem after upgrading xorg-server , but mine is an intel card.

Re: Arch Box very unstable after huge update

The problem with {enter} key seems solved  for now, after upgrading xorg-server to version 1.7.3.902-1... Thank you all!
I wasn't updating anything for about a month just because of "incompatibility" of xorg 1.7* and nvidia-173xx drivers. When I decided that enough time passed, again xorg-server made me problems sad.

But Skype, Ario, wp_tray problems persisted. Any idea how to solve this?

@graysky: your comment was about {enter} key crashing or about ario, skype?

Re: Arch Box very unstable after huge update

I had this problem and it seems repaired after adding the following two lines to /etc/gdm/custom.conf
[servers]
0=Standard vt7

This is mentioned in the Gnome wiki

Hope it helps someone.

This option is no longer supported at all:

Re: Arch Box very unstable after huge update

Today, when I hit ctrl+enter in firefox (for www. and .com completition) it crashed and one more time while I was typing post here. It becomes annoying...

If that file is not in charge any more, is there any other way to achieve this:
[servers]
0=Standard vt7

It looks like X or gdm bug, because mpd daemon still plays music after "crash"

And about Ario, when I revert to 1.3-2 it works. The strange thing is that version 1.4.1-1 that used to work before update, now doesn't work any more sad. Should I open a bug report? I'm not really sure that this is ario issue...

Re: Arch Box very unstable after huge update

New fix seems to be to make sure that GDM is the last thing in your DAEMONS entry in rc.conf
The wiki has not been updated to reflect that.

But there were several discussions about this previously.

I also found that having GDM without an @ as it is the last thing and it needs to load last getting to to start in parallel doesn't help.

Try that and see if it helps

Try to downgrade xorg-server

Re: Arch Box very unstable after huge update

GDM is now disabled (gdm is not any more under DAEMON list in the /etc/rc.conf file). Will test like it is now for a few days and if everything ok, will try to add gdm at the end of DAEMON array (without "@"). Thank you, insanemal, for suggestion.

Looks like gdm problem this time... thank you anyway.

Re: Arch Box very unstable after huge update

You can use the prev. version of gdm as detailed on the wiki:  http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gno … ngrade_gdm
