PCI gigabit lan card?

any suggestions on what PCI gigabit lan cards are safe to buy? I can't exactly go in a store and start tearing apart boxes looking for cards with supported chipsets?

Re: PCI gigabit lan card?

intel makes awesome NICs.
A bit spendy, but they rock.

Also, if your mobo supports pci-e, get a pci-e NIC instead. 1gbps is close to the top end of pci/33 speed.

I've had luck with the Broadcom (tg3?) gigabit cards.  Only piece of reliable Broadcom hardware I have.

The NIC is fantastic.  Gigalan using 4k jumbo frames give sustained xfer speeds between boxes of 45-55 MB/s.
