cannot display redbox dot com on firefox at all [SOLVED]

If I browse to http://www.redbox.com/ I get the following:

XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
Location: http://www.redbox.com/
Line Number 203, Column 89: <a href="http://www.redbox.com/Titles/AvailableTitles.aspx#Genre&genreID=1020" style="float: right;">More Movies</a>
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------^

Arch x86_64 update to date.  Can anyone else confirm?  Global problem or unique to my system?

Re: cannot display redbox dot com on firefox at all [SOLVED]

Whoever maintains the redbox website has an error in their xml markup.
There's nothing *you* can do about that.

(unless you're the webmaster, in which case it looks to me like the ampersand in "...Genre&genreID..." should be "...Genre&genreID...")

If the advice you're given in this forum solves your issue, please mark the post as [SOLVED] in consideration to others.

Re: cannot display redbox dot com on firefox at all [SOLVED]

Works for me™.

$ pacman -Q firefox
firefox 3.5.6-1

Most probably just a temporary error ... things sometimes break wink

Re: cannot display redbox dot com on firefox at all [SOLVED]

Dunno what to say:

$ pacman -Q firefox
firefox 3.5.6-1

EDIT: Looks like it's their problem:

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=www.r … ne&group=0

I don't understand why it fails on my system but works on rookie's system. Shouldn't it fail consistently for both of us?  Gecko is Gecko, no?

Works for me too.

firefox 3.5.6-1, but not _64 if that makes a difference?

Re: cannot display redbox dot com on firefox at all [SOLVED]

W3 checking catches a lot more than really bad errors I believe, it's supposed to check for accessibility compliance and that alone will make it output lots of errors on most pages I believe.

Take as an example 'required attribute "alt" not specified', although this seems to be required for accessibility compliance it shouldn't stop the page from rendering fine in firefox (or other gui browsers for that matter). I'm not a web developer so I can't comment on the other errors and warnings but it seems many problems should be ignored by modern browsers (some errors even seem to be caused by compatibility quirks for several browsers).

Try creating another user and launch firefox and check if it still presents the same problem (or you can try with a new firefox profile too, just rename the config folder and launch firefox again), just to make sure no extension or setting is causing problems.

Here I don't use many extensions/addons and the settings are almost unchanged from the defaults and things work, that's all I can say.

Oh and I'm using Arch x86_64 update to date too.

Re: cannot display redbox dot com on firefox at all [SOLVED]

New user gave the same error...

EDIT: It's a user agent problem.  Browse to about:config to show the advanced settings for your profile.
Default was:

general.useragent.extra.firefox
Shiretoko/3.5.6

I changed it and the offending site works now.

general.useragent.extra.firefox
Firefox

Re: cannot display redbox dot com on firefox at all [SOLVED]

Haaaa yes, never thought of that.
Actually mine says Firefox/3.5.6 , I've had problems because of the user agent before and I've changed it quite a long while ago, mind you that not having the version of the browser in the user agent might still break some pages.

If sites detect the user agent (and break for no good reason) then they might as well just display a warning page stating that instead of miserably breaking (in some cases this might not apply because the owners of the site/page would like very much for you to use their browser).
