I was looking at some ion screenshots, and two textmode music players caught my eye. I've been meaning to dig one up, because xmms and the like don't play nicely with ion.

It's the one on the right side of the screen.

well the second looks like mpg321 ... not sure what the first one is.
you may also want to try mp3blaster also available via pacman. the latter is an awsome ncurses player.

You could use noxmms (xmms without gui) + xmms-curses (a nice xmms ncurses interface):

Also alsaplayer works very well without gui and it supports many standards. Only it doesn't have any ncurses interface AFAIK.
There are many console based music players out there. Just run pacman -Ss player to chek what's available now in arch repos (there are at least cmus, cplay, moc, mp3blaster).
BTW The first srcreenshot looks like cplay.

Thanks for your help. I'm having problems getting mp3blaster and cplay to work. Mp3blaster says "failed to open sound device" whenever I try to play anything, and cplay just skips down the playlist whenever I try to play it. Come to think of it, sound doesn't work in doomsday either. It works in mpg321 and xmms though. I've got alsa set up with hardware mixing. Do I need to do anything else? Maybe these are oss apps?
EDIT: Ack, I guess the last time I reinstalled arch (I keep getting it crufty from trying out tons of random programs) I forgot to add my main user to the audio group. That fixed doomsday and mp3blaster. Cplay still doesn't work though.

I might mention that the one in the second picture is in fact mplayer...not mpg321...
The suggestion box only accepts patches.
