kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

Hi folks!

I have updated kernel on my PC to the latest version 2.6.32 (x86_64) a few hours ago.
Since then I have the problem that after a while (ca. 30 minutes) keyboard and mouse freeze.
Using a Geforce GTS 250 I gave the latest versions of nvidia driver (190.53 and 195.30(beta))
a try hoping that the problem will go away with a newer driver version.
Unfortunately it didn't solve the problem. I'm using the following configuration:

kernel 2.6.32 x86_64
Gforce GTS 250 (nvidia driver version 195.30 beta)
xorg 1.7.3
compiz 0.8.4

Any help is very much appreciated!

Regards
Nik

PS: Before installing the newest nvidia driver I have used
the packages nvidia and nvidia-utils (version 190.42)
from repository and encountered the same problem:-(

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

I have deactivated Compiz and rebooted my PC.
The same freezing problem as before but this time just after ca. 2 minutes!!

Regards
Nik

PS: How can I go back to kernel version 2.6.31 cleanly?

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

I have a similar problem, but i get the freeze when i start a program like thunar, xfce4-terminal or firefox, another thing is, that the keyboard shortcuts doesn't work and i can't click on the orage-clock.

I'm confused. ;(

Maybe nvidia beta driver is guilty here ? Can't you try last stable driver instead ?

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

Meanwhile I think that this has nothing to do with X and nvidia driver!
I got the same freezing of keyboard (and mouse) directly in console (no X).
It seemed at first glance that the system was hanging.
Then I logged in from another PC per ssh and everything worked flawlessly.
It seems that the kernel 2.6.32 causes some strange problems
regarding input devices (at least in my case!).

I returned back to kernel 2.6.31 and installed the latest nvidia driver
and everything works flawlessly!!

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

I have a similar problem, which may or may not be related to yours.

Yesterday, I did a system upgrade wich included the new 2.6.32 kernel and Nvidia drivers.

When I type, the text freezes for about a second, then unfreezes for another second, and the pattern endlessly repeats. This causes the mouse to freeze in sync with the keyboard. But, if I'm not currently typing, I have no problem with the mouse. If I type too much during a freeze, what I just entered is dropped and the new input takes its place.

Sorry if it is unrelated to the current issue!

I get the same freeze with the new kernel, and I'm not using nvidia drivers. Very annoying!

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

I compiled 2.6.31 from ABS this morning. I got stumped by the Nvidia drivers, while trying to revert back to 190.42. I could not manage to compile them because of missing kernel sources.

Concerning the current issue, my keyboard problem really is caused by the kernel. Between having no graphical interface and a buggy input, I think I prefer running 2.6.32. Meanwhile, I'm waiting for the next release, and adjusting my typing speed neutral

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

After upgrading to 2.6.32 I am experiencing the same problem but with Intel graphics.
Keyboard and touchpad become completely unresponsive a few minutes after login, you can't switch to a virtual terminal or kill X and you're forced to hard shutdown.

This is a total show-stopper.
I don't know which, if any, logs might be helpful - if someone has some ideas, pleeeease let us know.

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

I have found a solution to my problem. The random freezes have completely disappeared, and I have no clue as to why the workaround works.

I was searching through the forums, and tried to add a "nohz=off" option to my kernel boot, as it was mentionned elsewhere. Maybe it will work, I said to myself. After rebooting, I opened leafpad and typed random text. It worked for a moment, until I connected to my wireless network through wicd. The problem was there again.

I reasoned: maybe the "nohz" option did nothing, and the problem comes from wicd interfering with my input. As unlikely as it seems, I rebooted once more, and then connected manually with wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd. Another leafpad session, random typing, no problem.

Has there been history of wicd interfering with completely unrelatd system parts? Or is it a much deeper bug concerning a slightly mal-configured system? I really don't know. The only thing that I am aware now is that I can freely type without fear of losing input.

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

hi,

I had a similar problem. I had my mouse and keyboard connected over the PS2 ports. I just plugged both device in the USB port and the problem was gone.

Furthermore, I figured out that the keyboard freeze only occurs when I don't rely on the X hotplugging. So, since all references to the keyboards were removed from the xorg.conf I haven't had any troubles any more.

I left the mouse on the USB port though. I didn't bother fixing that.

cheers and I hope this helps you guys too.

* Edit: yes it still happens but less often, only once every two day or so

Looks like that was exactly the problem. Removed all references to mouse and keyboard in xorg.conf and the issue appears to be solved for me.
Thanks henniez!

*Edit - apparently this did not solve the problem, though it seemed to make it happen less often... ?

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

My problem is with 2.6.32.3-1, I removed all references in xorg.conf but it froze when I started virtualbox.  I don't think it has anything to do with virtualbox I think that in this case was just the catalyst for the freeze.  Backdated system to 1/7/10 with kernel 2.6.32.2-2 and no more freeze on virtualbox.  I am using nvidia driver for 6200le.

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

I report the same bug on my laptop, I noticed it only when I tried to start VirtualBox. Downgrading kernel to 2.6.32.2-2 fixed this problem.

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

I have the same bug. Downgrading the kernel to 2.6.32.2-2 did not fix that problem.

Maybe the screensaver was the problem for me, as it always froze when I was not using the system. Will report if it is resolved by disabling it.

Update: I try downgrading to 2.6.31 - in the upstream bug report it is said to fix the problem.

Update 2: ok, went pack to the newest 2.6.32.3-1, had display problems with 2.6.31
The combination,or one, the following measures seems to have fixed my problem:
* using Firefox 3.6 instead of chromium (chromium seems to play a role on my setup
* upgrading to xf86-video-intel-newest (2.10.0-2)
* disabling the locking of the screen and screensaver (as it only appears after being away sometime)
* disabling KMS

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

I had the same problem on my Eeepc 1005HA (Intel gfx, using HAL), I solved it by installing the login manager Slim, which I setup to start via inittab, all info is on the Wiki.

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

I had the same problem using the nvidia-beta-all package from AUR with kernel 2.6.32.  Applying the patch from the following thread to the nvidia source solved the problem for me.

Re: kernel 2.6.32 (mouse and keyboard freeze)

I still have the problem described in the first post. It started since kernel 2.6.32 and still happens even for kernel 2.6.35!
My mouse and keyboard just stop working after random period of time after booting. Also happens in terminal mode with no X server started. I tried all the ways suggested in this topic, but no luck: only reverting to 2.6.31 helped. And now when X server became incompatible with 2.6.31 (more precisely, with nvidia drivers for 2.6.31) keeping this 2.6.31 kernel is not so good.
I assume this bug is not related to X server or nvidia driver because I noticed it in pure terminal mode.
Can anybody help?
