DELL laptop owners should try this:

open /boot/grub/menu.lst with your editor of choice, as root, and find:

# (0) Arch Linux

root   (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/e9e3ecc2-2c13-4251-9151-84ef7971d78c ro acpi_brightness=vendor noapic
initrd /kernel26.img

Just add the part in bold, that fixed it for me at least. The non-bold part changes from installation to installation, but it's the first entry after all the comments.

Good luck,

Is that option going to alter my ability to adjust brightness? On my Dell laptop the brightness functionality works perfectly.

The acpi_brightness can be skipped, I accidently copy pasted that from my own configuration although it shouldn't alter it. Noapic should fix it.

Are there any other repercussions from having ACPI disabled?

Adding the option you recommended fixed my suspend-to-ram. Thank you! Whenever the new kernel is released, should I reverse that change?

Not here. If someone has it, can someone please report if it fixes the problem in this thread without needing the noapic option? If the new kernel works for you guys then I will just remove the option and then wait for the update to hit.

Re: Kernel 2.6.32.2-2 black screen after closing laptop lid (intel + KMS)

found a updated mirror, doesn't fix for me with a gm965 on x86_64 on a inspiron 1318.

btw, noapic didnt work for me either, do you have to mkinitcpio after you added that to grub?

edit:nvm , f this im going back to .31 and locking. im so tired of kernel vs xorg vs intel.

Still waiting for the update here. The "nopic" option fixed it the first time but the problem is back now.

Laptop lid does not need to be closed for the system to freeze. My system was idle for a long time and it just froze.

Re: Kernel 2.6.32.2-2 black screen after closing laptop lid (intel + KMS)

I'm having the same issue. Blank screen on my Thinkpad T60 (with a ATI Radeon X1400). Also TTY1/6 are black. I don't use KMS and have the 2.6.32 kernel. I also noticed that a secondary screen just works after the suspend. I think one out of 4 resumes are successful (so no black screen), but in 75% of the cases I have to reboot in order to get my screen back.

Furthermore I have the same issue as above: my laptop sometimes (around 4 times a week) just freezes and doesn't respond to anything. This just happens when my system is in idle state. I can not, however, find anything in the logs.

Edit: I noticed that sometimes I do see my mouse pointer when resuming from suspension. I am able to move the mouse, however apart from the mouse the screen is completely black.

I noticed that my problem went away after in KDE I disabled "Start Automatically" for screen saver under SystemSettings ->Desktop->Screen Saver.

But yet the scren saver started automatically. :-/

interesting. i'll have to try that.

could the problem be related to the radeon driver?

But I am on intel kms.
The issue I faced with kernel I have captured in a bug report here http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15015
Don't know if its relevant to all.

Re: Kernel 2.6.32.2-2 black screen after closing laptop lid (intel + KMS)

Why don't you disable KMS (kernel 2.6.32.3-1)
In your /boot/grub/menu.lst add "i915.modeset=0" at the very end of your "kernel" line, i.e.:

# (1) Arch Linux (GNOME)
title Arch Linux GNOME Login
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/... ro i915.modeset=0
initrd /boot/kernel26.img

It really works on my Dell Inspiron 1545 and Dell Mini 10v.:)

I was thinking about that but I really want to use KMS and I'd rather it be fixed without there having to be a regression. sad

Well as far as I can tell this doesn't happen in 2.6.33-rc3, just had a lockup again on 2.6.32.3 after screen suspended itself, BUG Soft Lockup etc...
