Check Hard Drive / Corrupted Files [SOLVED]

I am on a ~4 year old laptop, and am getting worried about the integrity of the hard drive... how can I check for problems?

EDIT: I am not really sure it is the drive, I am just getting some corrupted music files that I have been playing for ages.

Depends on the filesystem. Doesn't it periodically check? itself

You can install smartmontools, it is in the extra repository. With this you can obtain extensive information on the health of your hard drive. Detailed instructions on how to use it can be found here: http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/smartmontools/wiki

The drive in question is ext4. I am not worried about the filesystem, but more the state of the hard drive if there is a distinction.

I have some music files that have worked until last week, and now I am getting seek errors and file does not exist errors in mplayer. Perhaps there is another reason for this, but I still worry about the drive itself.

Advise in either aspect would be appreciated greatly.

EDIT:
Checking the corrupted files in question with ogginfo I get infinite blasts of:
Warning: Hole in data (2200500 bytes) found at approximate offset 662478192644194304 bytes. Corrupted ogg.

What in the world could cause this?

Re: Check Hard Drive / Corrupted Files [SOLVED]

Go to the drive manufacturer's website and download diagnostic tools for the drive. Follow the instructions to create a bootable disk (floppy/cd/usb) and then reboot into and run the diagnostic utility.

If, for some reason, you can't find diagnostics for your particular manufacturer, try using Drive Fitness Test

Hope this helps,
Munky

Re: Check Hard Drive / Corrupted Files [SOLVED]

Drive Fitness Test should give you pretty much the same result as issuing a full SMART self test with smartctl and then watching the results after the disk completes the tests.

However I believe it is always preferable to use the tools from the manufacturer, some SMART values are vendor specific and there may be vendor specific commands related with testing that obviously only the vendor knows about.
