ok, I just want to start some discussion over the front runners in the kernel patching world:
bk : ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/snapshots/
mm : ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/p … tches/2.6/
ck : http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/kernel/
ac : ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/p … linux-2.6/
i really don't have the time to read all the changelogs of all these, so I am kinda relying on the beauty of the internet to provide me with experts!
so post away!

good question -
just kinda wondering there differences, key features, overall performance...
I'm leaning towards mm right now, though I may just merge in the bk tree, as that's most bleeding edge....

And where were all the sportsmen who always pulled you though?
They're all resting down in Cornwall
writing up their memoirs for a paper-back edition
of the Boy Scout Manual.

That's what he said yes, I can read, don't worry. What I wanted to know is his goal, purpose, underlaying reason to start "just" some discussion.
bk & mm: Too unstable.
ac: Too stable. ;-)
ck: Hear very good things about it, and it looks great.
vanilla: Good enough for me.
I'll switch to ck soon.

Hmmm so far that's 2 votes for ck....
I was under the assumption bk is basically some patches Linus finds good enough to through in there.... maybe I'm wrong.
I've heard good things about mm too...

I'm using 2.6.9-nitro4, with absolutely no problems since 23.11.2004 (when I built it).
nitro4 includes the CK patchset + some extra features like Win4Lin & Software Suspend 2 - I can't get the network working in Win4Lin & I admint, I haven't tested Software Suspend and I can't comment.
Otherwise it is working pretty well on my new computer.

That's the article which spurned me to start this topic

I just felt the need to link it here, because I didn't want to quote every argument there.
My conclusion would be:
1. bk is unstable (=bleeding edge)
2. mm is experimental.. & ustable lately (& BIG)
3. ac seems to be the one that fixes things... and only that
4. ck is desktop oriented and it seems it does its job pretty well... although some people consider it experimental. It introduces a few new things not yet accepted in the kernel, but which work pretty nice... and.. it's quite SMALL overall
Of course, I might have missed some (important) points... I'm currently very pleased by the behaviour of CK and I don't plan changing it.

i built two nitro kernels with different clock speeds (my noise issue solved)and a ck kernel - i want to bench mark them but the bench marking program require internet acces to download from CVS (actually i'll just go and request this in the other forum)
nitro seems good to me - it has the fbsplash patch in it already (not vital) - what about love?

I'm all about the ac patchset, when I get my usb hard drive situation fixed I'm switching to it.

bk afaik is a snapshot of all the patches accepted since the last kernel release.
mm : ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/p … tches/2.6/
mm is a developmental kernel, where plenty of new features and things are tested out and used, before being struck into main. It's generally unstable and buggy.
ck : http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/kernel/
ck is a patchset that patches to stable, it is designed for desktop performance. It contains some patches that are in MM and other patchsets however it doesnt include unstable ones that break your system etc. Usually reliable
ac : ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/p … linux-2.6/
ac kernels are mainly ide patches and the like, and anything else alan wants in the kernel. So there's other things like alsa pacluded in the kernel at some later stage
