Hi all,
I want to test BitDefender on my system and have downloaded two files which appear to be wrapped rpm and deb files:
BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.amd64.deb.run
BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.amd64.rpm.run
Is there an easy way to extract the rpm and deb and then install one or other?
I seem to remember being able to do this but it is quite some time ago.
Thanks in advance,
Diesel1.

.run is a common extension for self-extractors (I think?). So maybe directly executing one of them will extract the .deb or .rpm. You can always do "file *.run" to determine their file type.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I did a bit of poking around and found the archive can be extracted without installing. Now I just need to find how to install a deb/rpm!

Well, I think yum is in the aur for installing rpms. But extra/rpmextract will extract an rpm for you, and you could easily use that in a PKGBUILD to make a pacman package.

rpmextract or rpmunpack in a PKGBUILD is the least worst way of handing rpms on Arch. For debs, use deb2targz.

Thanks for the tips. I think I will try deb2targz first.

Why not using this one?
BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.amd64.ipk.run
it's more easy to install

Do you have it installed? If so can you tell me what steps you took?
Thanks,

Yes, i have.
If so can you tell me what steps you took?
Let me remember.,. run this with root privilege.,.
./BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.amd64.ipk.run
Follow instructions on the screen, make sure there's no error message.
Don't forget to add your user to bitdefender group.
Good luck,

Many thanks, I didn't go for the ipk as this is the package format I use on my Zaurus PDA, I should have realised this would probably have been the easiest to use!

You should still make an Arch package - installing apps without using pacman is not recommended.

Hi all,
I should have known.....everything but scan works!
When I scan it instantly segfaults.
If it runs I will make a package (although you have to manually get a download link from the company via email).

If this is provided as a blob it's not likely to be a native 64-bit application. Do you have the appropriate 32-bit compatibility libs / a 32-bit chroot?

Yes, i (we?) know.,. i would happy if someone create pkgbuild for this
When I scan it instantly segfaults.
Perhaps it's "known" bugs for x86_64, it only occured when you running bdgui then click scanner button.
My dirty solution is creating service menu for dolphin/konqueror to doing file/folder scanning task.
Btw take a look at bitdefender blog, they create nautilus and konqueror integration as separate download.
Also im trying install it on Linux Mint 8 i686, everything works well
EDIT: i'm just installing bitdefender on openSUSE 11.2 x86_64 using *amd64.rpm.run, no segfault, so i don't have any idea what's missing

I do have 32 bit libs installed. I will try your suggestions and get back to you.

I installed it yesterday on my x86_64 without any problems. The gui crashes when clicking scanner, but I use the CLI options anyway.
I have no 32 stuff installed either

what do I do when I recieve:
failed to enter directory: permission denied
when scanning root directory????
I know something must be messed up with my permissions but what would I do to fix???
cannot launch it as root because I get:
> bdgui
No protocol specified
Failed to connect to the X server
thanks.

somewhat old thread.
By the way, the root directory shouldn't be open to a program started by you, the user. Try running with sudo, although that might screw something serious up.
You're running bdgui in X, right?
Offline
yes Im running bdgui in X.
sudo hasnt worked to launch it.
if it finds something it reports it before doing any action so it shouldnt mess anything up on its own.

Why you scanning root directory? isn't necessary
usually i use this to remove some nasty windows viruses from my usb flashdisk

yaourt -S bitdefender
why not include all of the packages like:
BitDefender-common-3.1.2-1.i586.rpm
BitDefender-mail-3.1.2-1.i586.rpm
BitDefender-radmin-3.1.2-1.i586.rpm
BitDefender-repo-1-1.noarch.rpm
BitDefender-samba-3.1.2-1.i586.rpm
bitdefender-scanner-7.6-3.i586.rpm
bitdefender-scanner-gui-1.0-3.i586.rpm
and the respective x86_64
Im using i686 and installed all of the packages.... my scan works fine.
