kernel 2.6.32 suspend to ram

Hello,

I have problem with suspend again. After last kernel upgrade, I can suspend to ram only once. If I try to suspend again - system freeze.
I thought, maybe problem is a nvidia driver - but this same is, when my X are turn off.

Few information:
pm-utils 1.2.6.1-3
kernel kernel26 2.6.32.2-2
laptop: hp pavilion dv6730ew

Maybe someone has similarly problem? Or maybe some hints, where should I search for reason?

Re: kernel 2.6.32 suspend to ram

Hi,

I have the same problem with an Dell Vostro 1320 running kernel 2.6.32.3-1, pm-utlis 1.2.6.1-3 and gnome.
But I can never suspend. Already the first suspend after reboot failed.

X shut down but then, when the system should turn off there is only a cursor.

Also since update to kernel 2.6.32 load-modules.sh apper's in the logfile with the message that e.g. 'acpi:device:' is not a valid module or alias name

Re: kernel 2.6.32 suspend to ram

Same Problem here. I'm using a Thinkpad X60s. I can sleep/awake one time. If I try again, the system freezes.

In addition, after wakeup the graphics flickers periodically (maybe once a minute), and after some time (15 minutes?) the screen blanks. The X server freezes, but I can cleanly shut down using the power button in this situation. I disabled the new KMS-feature, but it didn't help.

I'm using kernel26 2.6.32.5-1, but had the problem with 2.6.32.3 and with earlier kernels also (don't remember when it started).

Re: kernel 2.6.32 suspend to ram

Same problem on a Samsung N140 ( http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 92#p699192 )

kernel 2.6.32.6-1
pm-utils 1.2.6.1-3

I cannot resume even once : sometimes, I get only a black cursor, sometimes I get my screen back with everything frozen.
I've tried disabling KMS: it doesn't cange anything.

Did anyone tried that : http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pm- … reen_issue ?

I also had the same issue. Then I installed acpid and after that I was able to suspend multiple times.

Re: kernel 2.6.32 suspend to ram

I think there are 2 kinds of issues being discussed here.
1. Only second resume fails. System freezes even before getting suspended. ( The original topic)
2. Cannot resume after suspension.

For the 1st group can anyone else try installing acpid and see if it fixes.

For the 2nd group they could try this http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pm- … esume_Hook
This is my HOOKS array

HOOKS="base udev keymap autodetect pata scsi sata resume filesystems"

UPDATE: Guess I am wrong about acpid fixes issue 1. But I swear that I did multiple suspend/ resume cycle before posting here. And now it froze again for me. sad
But this is appearing to be randomly, not necessarily the second time.

Re: kernel 2.6.32 suspend to ram

@jithin1987:
I think the 2 issues are the same, I also managed to suspend and hibernate sometimes, randomly (very few times)
In the 'original topic, the freeze comes after getting suspended (see pm-suspend.log above, very similar to mine : http://pastebin.com/m181e4a24 )
I think pbilski didn't explain precisely his problem

Re: kernel 2.6.32 suspend to ram

I think they are different. I don't have problem with resume. It freezes just before the suspend process gets completed. I think that's also pbliski meant.

May be pbliski can explain more.

Re: kernel 2.6.32 suspend to ram

I will have to check. In between I did some successful suspend/resume. I will get back after reproducing it. Right now I am moving from kdemod to kde-unstable atm. After that I will check.

Re: kernel 2.6.32 suspend to ram

Ok, I'm back in topic wink

Problem with suspend started with 2.6.32.2 kernel. Next versions 2.6.32.x causes that suspend doesn't work general.
Newer kernel 2.6.32.7  - suspend works only one time:

I can successfuly suspend, next - I can wake up, but when i try to suspend again - system freeze.

@jithin1987: I have installed acpid all the time.

My laptop can be suspended repeatedly without a problem, ASUS F8SG. Also using nvidia-beta binary driver.

Re: kernel 2.6.32 suspend to ram

I have same problem with suspend to ram/disk with Dell Inspiron e1505 running kernel-ice from AUR (2.6.32.7,  bfs and tuxonice patches).
Sometimes everything works but mostly it freezes (black screen) just after the resume process gets completed.

After last crash (resume from suspend to disk) I discovered in my Xorg.0.log.old something like this:

Re: kernel 2.6.32 suspend to ram

Hi I believe I have similar problem. I cannot resume after suspend to RAM on Dell Inspiron 6400, nvidia drivers:

The suspend process seems to be working, but when I am trying to start the computer it blinks and reset itself. Suspend to disk is working perfectly.

The resume hook is used. No change while suspending from KDE or the command line.

Initial commandline parameters:

Mon Feb 22 17:27:13 CET 2010: performing suspend

Any ideas?

It used to work before an update (not sure which, probably a kernel update).

Re: kernel 2.6.32 suspend to ram

I've got an Inspiron 1720 and I have the same behavior (reboots rather than resume) with any 2.6.32 kernel.  All 2.6.31 kernels are fine (as were 2.6.30 and 2.6.29).

I logged this about the issue:

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15292

Any ideas for futher steps? Wait for the new kernel perhaps..

Have you tried different video drivers?

The problem is fixed for me with the latest kernel and nvidia drivers.

My laptop can be suspended repeatedly without a problem, ASUS F8SG. Also using nvidia-beta binary driver.

That likely won't help unless if you have the same model of laptop as one of the users with a problem. All hardware is different so if it works on yours it might work on mine.

I would guess that this has something to do with the kernel. Can someone try a kernel bisect?

EDIT: woops help if I would read. Well anyone who has a similar issue, try the suggestion above.
