Hi!
I recently bought a new computer and installed Arch x64 with KDE (vanilla). Previously I have used Gnome, Openbox and fvwm on Arch, so KDE is completely new to me. Apparently, KDE keeps freezing and hangs randomly when I'm using desktop effects. Either the mouse or the keyboard or both become unresponsive for a short while, or indefinitely. Trying to access another tty won't do either. Hard reboot is normally the only option. When turning off desktop effects, all is well.
My installation is completely based on the wiki's Beginners Guide. I can't find any general errors in the logs, but if you point me to a certain log file I will post it, of course. Relevant hardware:
Acer 5300
AMD X4 620
Nvidia GT 220
I've installed the nvidia 190.53-1 driver.
What should I do in order to be able to use KDE's desktop effects without hassle?

I've had an an Acer (though a 5100 series) and noted that it was very prone to overheating. How are the cpu, mobo, gpu, and hard drive temps in your Acer? Perhaps the issue might be heat related.

I haven't noticed any abnormal temperatures. GPU runs idle at around 45 C (~115 F), CPU at 35 C (~95 F), "core" at 30 C (85 F). The highest temp I've seen is GPU at 60 C when heavily used.
Glxgears use 100% CPU when testing, btw.

So, I've been spending the last 20 or so hours trying to get this working. Did a fresh install along with the same Nvidia 190.53 driver and Gnome, which is extremely snappy. However, when I install KDE (after having removed Gnome, of course) I am completely locked out. No response whatsoever from keybord or mouse input for over 15 minutes after having started KDE. I see the desktop, but everything is frozen. KDE is completely and utterly non-usable, forcing a hard reboot.
I tried installing the nvidia-beta driver (195.30) via yaourt, but it didn't produce any output with "nvidia - xconfigure". How should I go about installing that driver in order to get it working?

Surprised you're having so many problems with KDE if Gnome is ok. Nvidia install:
# pacman -S nvidia
followed by:
# nvidia-xconfig
Before you do that you'll need a working /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
# Xorg -configure
and then:
# cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
