mpd pipe and fifo outputs

I tried to play some time around pulseaudio to use mpd with projectm... then I realized, that pa is a whole mess, but I've found two interesting things about mpd: it can pass output decoded stream via pipes and to fifo file.

So I have a question: can these outputs be used for, f. ex. converting audio files from mpd (pass output stream to encoder) or, maybe, for using mpd with projectm?

I just don't want to try it myself, because I afraid of breaking something, as I don't understand pipe mechanism very well.

(Sorry for) BUMPing this up. I have googled around and haven't found any solution to this.
I think it's technically quite easy to setup, but I don't know much about ProjectM.

So. Any development on this after almost two years?

No. Just some weeks ago, I tried to do the same. People referred me to projectM-pulseaudio but that's not an option for me.

In theory, it's dead simple. Read from the mpd pipe (+ solve some synchronization issues, see ncmpcpp vis) and display it using projectM. I'd actually be willing to write a program like that. Problem is, I'm too stupid to find good documentation on projectM and/or libvisual. Maybe there is none, I don't know. I gave up on it.
