Here it is, give it a try, I had a huge speed increase by switching to the nitro kernels so I figured i'd let you try it.
package:
http://aslan.no-ip.com/~iphitus/downloa … pkg.tar.gz
pkgbuilds:
http://aslan.no-ip.com/~iphitus/downloa … l26-nitro/
Nitro 4 kernel includes:
Software Suspend 2, Reiser 4, fbsplash, New vesafb - vesafb-tng, Plenty of speed improvements

Enjoy.

notes for reiser4: neotuli has reiser4progs on his repo, so grab that . Also, if you use GRUB and wish to use reiser4, it needs a patch from here: ftp://ftp.namesys.com/pub/reiser4progs/grub/
I'll make a package with a patched version of grub later today.
Note for new vesafb: add video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-16@60 to your append line in lilo. Change the res and refresh to whatever you like. Remove vga=
note for suspend: add resume2=swap:/dev/hdXX to lilo's append line to point to your swap partition. To not suspend, append noresume2

Just installed this, works great. There's actually a noticable performance increase, and I certainly wasn't expecting that. Thanks for packaging it.

No problem, I plan to start packaging them every time a new release comes out

Yeah, the software suspend is broken, it's supposed to be able to be compiled as module to allow more options, eg different compression formats, different writers - but it aint working. Im compiling it in now.

Thx for it , i was just about to compile nitro myself when i saw it (save me many cpu cycles ) .

Ok, new one with fixed suspend is uploading as I post this, new pkgbuild and config is up. Same url as before.

Nice job. There is a noticeable speed increase running this kernel. I hope you continue to build them for the arch community. Thanks!

Although there might be a speed increase, i think the kernel is not as stable as he would be with the vanilla sources.
But i will give this kernel-patch chance... tommorow or something like that.

It's been just as stable as any vanilla kernel has been for me. It doesnt have any stability issues whatsoever. Give it a try, its worth it.

Notze's right to worry though. The last time I ventured into a nitro patchset, I couldn't keep my box up for more than a few minutes. That was probably my fault somehow, but paranoia ensued regardless. I certainly wouldn't build a nitro kernel again.

There are the occassional lemons and that's expected with a patchset with experimental stuff, but recently they've been kickass. Besides there isnt anything *too* new or developmental in these ones. It's all pretty stable stuff.

Hm
i have compiled a new kernel with the nitro patchset.. and yes i noticed a little speed increase...
but I don't think i will run kernels with a nitro patchset in the near future... the vanilla sources
suite me and thats ok.

What exactly is different about the nitro kernels?

nitro-sources is a set of patches for the Linux kernel to improve desktop performance and experience

I've been running 2.6.9-nitro4 exclusively since Nov 23, 2004 with no problems. A month with no problems is something, IMO.
P.S. and I'm also running the 'bloated' KDE.

I have problem with framebuffer. with the standard kernel and 'vga=792' in my lilo.conf, it boots up at 1024x768. with nitro it asks for a correct mode number... :?
Offline
since you did 2.6.9 are you going to do a package for 2.9.10 ? Lol just wondering

hm.. perhaps he has to wait till there is a new patchset

append="video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-16@85"
fixed this for me.
I'm not sure if it is the equivalent of vga=792, but it works ok for me. Btw, remove (comment) vga=.. option. vesa-tng does not need it.

Yep, in Nitro i chose the new framebuffer, you can set it by adding it to the append line as follows (and mentioned above):
append="video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-16@85"
Of course, change the refresh and res to whatever you want and your monitor can handle
As for 2.6.10, I will bring out a nitro as soon as it comes out. In the meantime, are there any extra drivers or patches you want me to include with it?
Offline
I didn't know that you have to wait until a patchset comes out for 2.6.10, I thought that it was sorta a universal patch for all kernel versions I thought they would have a limit to them like 2.6.8 would be the oldest kernel version that the patch would work with...
I'm having a little trouble with the software suspend. I've looked at some man pages and a few FAQ s online and according to them, my computer should come to a halt when I do ./hibernate , and it does, and shuts off, and I turn it on, select the nitro-kernel since that's from where I did the software suspend... then it gives me an error that it could not put the kernel back into place or something... I've looked at some of the Troubleshooting stuff, but non of the cases I can relate to the problem that I get, I wrote down the error message on a piece of paper just can't find it I'll post it when I do.
as for any other patches... let me learn on what's out there, lol and I can see what nitro doesn't have... which to be seem like none

I uploaded a new one the other day. See back a page. It didnt work cause I built it as a module, and not surprisingly, it didnt suspend
