Can't get ucview to work

I'm using Arch Linux with kernel 2.6.32 SMP.  My webcam is a USB camera with ID 046d:08d9 (Logitech, Inc. QuickCam IM/Connect).  I compiled and installed unicap v.0.9.7-1 and ucview v.0.30-1 from the current pkgbuilds in AUR (dated Aug & Oct 2009).

When I start ucview from the start menu or from the command line, the "Select Device" window comes up all right and shows "Device: USB Camera (046d:08d9)" and "Video Format: JPEG", and clicking on OK brings up the main GUI.  However, the camera LED isn't lit, and I can't get any video image.

This webcam works fine in Arch Linux in vlc, Skype, xawtv, MPlayer.

dmesg output when I unplug the cam and plug it back in:

usb 5-1: USB disconnect, address 2
gspca: disconnect complete
usb 5-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
usb 5-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
