[Solved] Need Help installing modem driver on old laptop...

I have an old gateway laptop, and I'm currently stuck using dail up. The modem designation is "SmartLink 56K Voice Modem" and a quick google search brought me here: http://members.cox.net/arickiver1/gw450x.html (my laptop is actually quite a bit better than this guy's, but the modem is the same)

He suggests using the SmartLink HAMR5600 modem driver to get dial up to work. I can't find this anywhere. Plus my laptop can't download anything without internet access. I could try to get to a wireless connection point somewhere in the town though... ANY help would be greatly appreciated. I could just revert the computer to windows xp, but I'd rather stick with linux...

Re: [Solved] Need Help installing modem driver on old laptop...

hfs modem doesn't support my modem and it has limitations: "you need to buy a license from Linuxant (http://www.linuxant.com/) to be able to use the full capability & speed of your modem, else your modem would only work at 14.4 kbps"

I think a linux SmartLink HAMR5600 modem driver exists, I am just having trouble finding one, perhaps because using my grandpa's vista computer with dial up means websites load in 5min. or more... I hate the number of flash ads and pictures on websites now.

I did some quick googling and found this:

http://www.modem-help.co.uk/old/chips/s … html#linux

supposedly for:

HAMR5600TM Soft V.90 ACR (Advanced Communication Riser)
HAMR5600TM Soft V.90 AMR (Audio Modem Riser)
HAMR5600TM Soft V.90 CNR (Communication Network Riser)
HAMR5600TM Soft V.90 MDC (Modem Daughterboard Card) (Mini-PCI)
(AC97 2.1 compatible Riser Cards)

Hope it helps.

Re: [Solved] Need Help installing modem driver on old laptop...

See if this page helps you: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto

Use the scanmodem technique to find out about your modem, then use the link that suits your case to set up the modem's driver, then use wvdial(conf) technique to set up your connection.

Keep in mind that Arch Linux seems to have packages for slmodem stuff:

$ pacman -Ss slmodem
extra/slmodem 2.9.11-49 [0.19 MB]
    Drivers for the Smartlink winmodems. For stock arch 2.6 kernel
extra/slmodem-utils 2.9.11-16 [0.47 MB]
    Userspace tools for the Smartlink winmodems.

I don't know how they work, but here are the links to the files:
http://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/ext … pkg.tar.gz
http://mirrors.kernel.org/archlinux/ext … pkg.tar.gz

Copy them to your PC, install with "pacman -U full_package_name_here".

My guess is that installing these two packages is the equivalent of the following direction set in the ubuntu slmodem (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Dialu … /Smartlink) wiki:

$ sudo module-assistant auto-install sl-modem
$ sudo depmod -a

Let us know how it goes smile

edit: If you did not, do run the scanmodem utility and study its output to make sure you have the chip that you think you have in that softmodem...
