Audio Routing to Outputs [solved]

I have an HP Pavilion DV4 with Intel HDA Audio.
I am trying to connect to a 1080p HDMI television.

The audio works perfectly on the internal analog audio and built-in speakers.
The audio works over HDMI using the KDE multimedia setup test sound. (And sounds pretty good)
I promoted HDMI sound to the preferred slot for all catagorys in KDE Multimedia setup.

I try to play a DVD with mplayer, Xine and dragon player.  The video looks great, but the audio insists on coming from the laptop speakers.

Any hints as to where to look?

Re: Audio Routing to Outputs [solved]

Ended up doing two things:

(1) Used gstreamer instead of xine backend for phonon
(2) Installed full blown pulseaudio stuff.  Pulseaudio volume Control allows explicit control of where to send stuff.

So much for trying to keep at as simple as possible.

HDMI, pulseaudio, phonon, KDE?

Doesn't sound like a recipe for simplicity smile. Some complexity in your apps is desirable if it makes your life easier (pulseaudio's 'send this stream here now' feature for example).
