the kde-unstable 4.4 issues/discussion thread

i am opening this thread in order to discuss problems and general stuff refering to kde 4.4 from kde-unstable repository.

I start with the first problem i encountered this morning when i upgraded my system :

I have a problem with nepomuk daemon not starting. I tried to enable it in systemsettings through "Desktop search" menu, and i realized that "Desktop search" is missing. Do i need to install anything extra in order to have these settings back?

You shouldn't use the kde-unstable repo until it's officially announced. We are still on it and there are things known to be broken.

Re: the kde-unstable 4.4 issues/discussion thread

Well you are doing a pretty god job so far big_smile Have some small issues with various apps (konversation crashing upon closing it, minor issues with lancelot etc) but no deal brakers.

Can you just inform me on lack of debugging symbols for kde, gdb doesn't reproduce propper info on crash reports, is there a way to include them by myself ? I know the packages are smaller without debugging symbols included and I respect that (good thing when kde reaches stable) but for testing purposes they are usefull...

Re: the kde-unstable 4.4 issues/discussion thread

You need to compile yourself if you want debugging symbols. This repo is not meant for testing KDE just it's packaging.

Well as Pierre said it's not complete and troubles are possible, so we do it on our own smile

I chose to enable the unstable repo because I was curious and for now - curiousity didn't killed the cat big_smile

@flamelab

Press alt+f2 and type desktop, among proposed solutions you will find Desktop Search, configure nepomuk and enable strigi and thats it. Nepomuk will only work if you have virtuoso package installed. Strigi just indexed my home directory and it's working like a charm smile

i cannot test it right now, but as it seems the only problem is a missing section/icon in systemsettings?

Re: the kde-unstable 4.4 issues/discussion thread

Can someone tell me on which package contains strigicmd ? (I'm not in arch right now).

I remember that strigi couldn't even run.

Re: the kde-unstable 4.4 issues/discussion thread

@flamelab

strigi contains strigicmd smile

@mechmg93

Yep, they moved it from system settings but it can't be found in the menu except for searching it with alt+f2

What is funny is that strigi indexed my home folder, everything is ok, but when I try to search for anything in dolphin it comes up with nothing, except for a very long command starting with nepomuksearch:and_some_hi_tech_mysql_sentences big_smile

Re: the kde-unstable 4.4 issues/discussion thread

I'm stupid. How to use kde-unstable repository?

I have added this to my /etc/pacman.conf:

[kde-unstable]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

After that I did this:

yaourt -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...
 core is up to date
 extra is up to date
 community is up to date
 archlinuxfr is up to date
 kde-unstable is up to date

Now what? Like I said, I'm stupid smile

Re: the kde-unstable 4.4 issues/discussion thread

Every since upgrading to 4.4, Firefox has no sound at all (but files on my computer do). I am not sure if KDE has anything to do with sound in Firefox but it happened around the same time.

I tried to play this video and I get no sound:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6L8iSoaSPn4

It WAS working but I may have to start a new topic if it's not related to KDE.

Re: the kde-unstable 4.4 issues/discussion thread

Well it works for me, I have firefox installed just in case if rekonq iz giving me trouble on some web site. Playing that lacuna coil video works on both ff and rekonq.

Just for the record rekonq is acting strange sometimes, web sites aren't loaded correctly since upgrade @ certain points, could be webkit trouble...

Thank you. Perhaps I will try rebooting later, I usually don't reboot that box. Oddly enough, Audacious doesn't work either but it just doesn't even start trying to play audio so it's probably a different problem.

Re: the kde-unstable 4.4 issues/discussion thread

This repo has virtuoso 6 and I believe that soprano only supports virtuoso 5.
