I've got 2 pointing devices, a trackball attached to USB (/dev/input/mice in xorg.conf) and a 5-button mouse attached to PS/2 (/dev/psaux in xorg.conf). They both work perfectly, the extra buttons work as they should, but they both control the same pointer. Is there any way to get separate pointers for each pointing device?

very interesting idea! i also have an internal pointer and an external logitech on usb ... and your idea sounds funny but cool!
i have no idea, how you do this ... but please post the solution here, if you find it

hm. i think you can have two pointers with Xfree.. but its only one cursor which reacts on both of them.. i think

yikes..don't start that talk
next thing you know you will need two joysticks, a set of foot pedals, and a set of directional goggles..all to use your desktop.

After some light research I can tell you this - no, you can't do it.
Windows, X and whatever Mac OS X calls it graphical interface is written with the pointer in mind - one pointer, not two etc.
To err is human... to really foul up requires the root password.

i do a lot of peer programming at my office and i know more than one set of input devices would be significantly cool. beit n number of keyboards and x number of mice.
i do think that this thought is more useful that just geek fun. color coded cursors and pointers would be sweet.
