Altering xorg.conf after removal of nVidia card?

My nVidia FX-5200 card is toast and I have temporarily replaced it with an old PCI video card. I have hand edited the corg.conf file to replace the nVidia driver line with "vesa" and I ahve also tried running "Xorg -configure" to no avail. It still wants to pick up the nvidia driver line. startx fails. Do I need to remove the nVidia module that is being automatically loaded each boot?
