Re: comp.os.linux.archlinux - creation of newsgroup - your help needed!

@OP. I was just browsing the emacs[1] website and noticed that they link their mailing list and newsgroup. Might be an option if you were still looking at this.

To ask for help with GNU Emacs, use the mailing list help-gnu-emacs@gnu.org or the newsgroup gnu.emacs.help. The mailing list and newsgroup are linked: messages posted on one appear on the other as well.

Re: comp.os.linux.archlinux - creation of newsgroup - your help needed!

I was just checking news.groups.proposals to see if my RFD for comp.os.linux.archlinux was getting anywhere. Looks like the only people still reading those newsgroups are the admins. I wonder why, although I have a hunch. It certainly doesn't look like that group is going to be created. Apparently, it's more resource-wasting and more work to create a newsgroup, than discussing why it shouldn't be created.

For your amusement, I have posted the most interesting quotes from some of the people lurking in news.groups.proposals:

"I'd never hearch of a distro named "arch" before but I work on large
data centers not small systems.  I checked under the alt.* heirachy and
the place for distros seems to be alt.os.linux.*.  There are a lot of
distros there whose name I recognized.  Maybe alt.os.linux.archlinux
would be the way to go."

>> I've seen little new comment on this RFD. More importantly, I've seen
>> almost NO support for the proposed group in this place.
>>
>> If the proponent wants the group - more support here is needed. IMHO of
>> course.
>
> I agree; I had just been thinking the same thing.

"Conventional wisdom says that this group will not work.
Look, the specific reason I built RootsWeb was because the Big8
management back then was such a PITA that it was easier to build
a whole new Internet facility supporting tens of thousands of
mailing lists rather than deal with the USENET administration."

Well I thought it was a nice idea. Maybe another day.

PS: On a more happy note, this distro ROCKS, and not to do any advertising, but a major server hosting company in Europe has added Archlinux to its repertoire (hint, hint) only two months ago!! Yay. Guess what I am running now. smile

Re: comp.os.linux.archlinux - creation of newsgroup - your help needed!

it was a good effort, but usenet has steadily been going the way of the dodo for most groups. (some still hang around, and alt.binaries.* will probably never go away (the main ones anyway))

"I know what you're thinking, 'cause right now I'm thinking the same thing. Actually, I've been thinking it ever since I got here:
Why oh why didn't I take the BLUE pill?"

So did I. Pity. sad

I much prefer newsgroups, where everything is always the same and filtering out spam and trolls is your responsibility, to web forums where the quoting system's always different, some use bbcode, some use HTML, some don't allow styles at all... grrrr. Hate 'em. And that's before you get to the maniac obsessive moderators (not a problem here, I hasten to add smile ).

As you're the first to reply in 5 years, I guess there was no interest. Use the mailing lists as suggested, and leave the dead to rest.

If you prefer newsgroups, use the gmane interface for the mailing lists.

I think it is a good time to close this thread.
