Did you install X? Try the beginner's guide:

Different environments have different GUI tools for setting the screen resolution.

You need to install the VirtualBox guest additions. These will also need to be (auto) started manually if you decide to forgo a full desktop environment. I don't remember their names but I'm sure they started with a capital 'V' if you want to tab complete for them.
