[Solved] Warcraft screen freeze

I few weeks ago before I moved to Arch I had sidux on my computer. I had Wine running Warcraft III fine for months. So then I also wanted to play Starcraft (which doesn't work so well on Wine) so I installed virtualbox with Windows XP. I forget how exactly I did it but I ran virtualbox from the terminal a specific way to make virtualbox render Starcraft fullscreen (which is 640x480 natively).

After I had done this I realized my computer was also now stretching Warcraft III to fullscreen (stretching 1074x768 to 1280x800 whereas before it would show up as a 1074x768 box on my screen). I didn't mind this too much (although I didn't realize why it was doing this) until when I first tried to play Warcraft for about 5-10 minutes the screen would go black (or a dark greenish) and completely freeze my computer (but sound would still play). My computer was completely unresponsive and I had to hard reset.

However now that I have Arch Warcraft III is doing the same thing (stretching and freezing) and I don't even have virtualbox installed. And since I had wiped my HDD for Arch they aren't related but I figured the answer might be the same and the more info the better.

Any ideas?

What is your video card? What drivers are you using. From what you describe this is a typical xorg-server crash that steals the input and hardlocks.

Re: [Solved] Warcraft screen freeze

i experienced the same problem since kms was enabled by default for intel graphic cards, so the solution to that was to disable kms in the menu.lst and everything worked without screens going black etc! but this is only the case if you have an intel graphic cards and will not help on others i guess wink

Re: [Solved] Warcraft screen freeze

I do have an Intel chip and disabling KMS did the trick. Although being able to play Warcraft is the only benefit I see as the virtual consoles look like crap now. There's always a trade-off. Thanks guys.
