XBMC on Argosy Video HDD Pro (HV359T)

I recently got am Argosy Video HDD Pro and got it all setup (which was sort of a pain since it wouldnt work in windows 7) and I accidentally found out that it runs linux via busybox. When I connected it to my pc kde device notifier popped up and said that three partitions were available: 2 ext3 and one ntfs. The two ext3 partitions hold linux (which was installed via windows, odd huh?) and the ntfs partition holds your media.

The device itself has a few flaws but its not bad for being $80 (technically its more than that since you need to put a hdd in it for it to work), just for the hell of it I downloaded Xbox Media Center since I haven't used it in awhile and its gorgeous. I compiled it from the AUR lastnight and it runs great on a full fledged linux installation but I was wondering if it would be possible to replace the default GUI for the Argosy with XBMC or have it so that it runs XBMC as an app. Storage isnt a problem since AFAIK everything is stored on the HDD and not in flash chips.

Re: XBMC on Argosy Video HDD Pro (HV359T)

Find out the architecture the device uses, maybe it even uses some embedded distribution you can find a cross-compile toolchain for. Xbmc (it's not called Xbox Media Center anymore, just Xbmc now, since the Xbox part is a different project now) runs on a multitude of architectures - e.g. their GSOC project is porting Xbmc to the Beagleboard (which sports an ARM CPU).

If you can hack the OS of your device, and get Xbmc compiled and installed, it should be a piece of cake to get Xbmc to take over as the GUI.

I wonder if I can chroot into it or something, I know it has two ext3 partitions and one NTFS. IIRC I couldnt really find anything that was that interesting, Ill look again. The thing that really sucks is the remote, but if I have it connected to my network I can control it with my moto droid! big_smile
