Very simple and very serious problem here, folks: my terminals just don't work. At all. Aterm (my favorite) flickers briefly and disappears, Eterm says "press a key to exit" - does just that if you try to do anything - and Xterm (!!!) just disappears. Haven't tried RXVT yet, but I'm guessing it will give me the same crap.
Any idea what's causing this?

Ahh, here we go:
Can't open pseudo-tty - aborting.
Also for Xterm,
Can't open - not enough ptys.
Anything I can do about this? Is this an XOrg config problem (I have 3d acceleration, composite, RENDER, and glx enabled... Could that cause trouble like this?)
Oh BTW, rxvt does cause the same stupid crap.
Edit: FYI, I am using the precompiled kernel package and bash.

You just switched from a 2.4 to a 2.6 kernel without doing the needed stuff. To fix your console problem add the following line to your /etc/fstab:
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0

No, I didn't switch kernels; I did an FTP install with the 2.6 kernel. I've done previous installs with the same kernel via that method and never had this problem before.
Thanks, though.

Uhh.. Dunno what to tell you man, but that line is already in /etc/fstab. Any other config files to edit?

Did you compile your kernel yourself?
In that case, make sure you have the following compiled in:
Filesystems --->
Pseudo Filesystems --->
[*] /dev/pts Extended Attributes
good luck
To err is human... to really foul up requires the root password.

"Precompiled kernal package" as in "Kernel 2.6 IDE", or perhaps "Kernel-2.6.9-1-ARCH".

Ahh... A reinstall fixed it. Well, thanks anyway.

a reinstall of Arch? Is there an easier way to fix this? I have a similar problem. Eterm starts up and tells me to press a key to exit. Error is the same as above with the pseudo-tty.
No other term starts. Stock kernel, using udev and I have the above line in my fstab...
