yet another login problem

I've just got my Arch linux setup beyond the installation steps, however, I can only get the DE to work when I login as root. When I try to login as user the terminal window only pops up.
Any ideas?

Are you using "startx" or a display manager? (like GDM, KDM, or SLiM)

What is in your ".xinitrc" file?

I guess you'll find your solution there, in the Beginners' Guide. If not, please be more accurate and refer to which step of it won't work. Of course you're not obliged to follow the Guide but then you should already know what you're doing an be able to be more detailed.

Well, this is what I have in my /.xinitrc file:

The display manager that I am using is SLiM (I don't know if that will be needed though), so when I boot the computer, the usual login display for SLiM comes up and I'd type in root then my password and then I'm in the DE that I chose. However, when I reboot it or logout to the login screen and type in my user name and password, the only thing that comes up is the terminal window with the same SLiM background instead of being in my DE.
The only guess that I have is that it must have to do with the user not having permission to enter into the DE but, I have no idea how to do that. I even tried a gpasswd -a user log and adm but, I'm not sure if that has to do with my problem though.

I may be not the best advisor for a fast way to handle this but the first thing i would try in this case would be

1) removing slim from rc.conf

2) logging in as user at the command line

3) trying to do 'startx' and check the output

Make sure you have permissions over .xinitrc and everything else your /home.

And when I exited from the console it also said, "FATAL: Module fbcon not found."

Hmm. How do you enable permissions to the user over all /home files? It couldn't be "gpasswd -a user root", could it?

Aha! I figured it out!

What happened was that all that time the ~/.xinitrc file that I've shown you was the one that was used when I was root. However, it wasn't until I did

nano ~/.xinitrc

in my user account and found out that I was using "exec xterm" instead of the DE that I wanted to use. So everytime when I logged in as user, it ended up being something that I didn't want (looked like a black screen with just the console).

I didn't know that you also had to make the same changes in your user account as in the root account.
