Hi, I was wondering if there is a good way to invert colors in X. It would really faciliate reading much text in pdfs for example.
I have seen here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=67234, that xpdf is able to do this and I will use it.
But in general it would be great if one could just invert everything by a shortcut (or by restarting X with the right option, if necessary).
Thanks in advance

I don't know if this is possible for your setup. but compiz has a plugin "Negative" which allows you to invert either just the active window or the whole desktop. I use it for the exact purpose you mention.

Yes, I know about that feature. I'm running wmii though. Forgot to mention it
I've also been looking for help on IRC. There I was told I would have to mess with either the driver or the X-server source.
In a year maybe...
Another solution proposed was to write a small composition-manager just for that purpose. I will see if there maybe is such a thing already.
Coding it myself would exeed my knowledge completely^^
I'll give an update in case I can find anything

For invert colors in X, I use command:
xcalib -invert -alter
It`s priceless.
Enjoy

Wow! Man, this is... Yeeah!
Thanks alot. This makes me want to put on my porkpie and skank on the street. Only that I don't have one.
Marking as solved. (xcalib is in AUR btw.)

Thanks man !
Cause of my rotated dual head/monitor setting I can not have composition on my desktop, so kde effects for invert colours does not work, while my eyes needs white on black. I've found xpdf -rv option and okular -> preferences -> accessibility -> invert , plus some firefox plugins and bookmarklets helpful, but still uncomfortable and not reliable.
xcalib -invert -alter
is life changing, as @quick said "priceless" .
My eyes say : Thanks , what's a relief.

Apparently this answer is timeless... (said the blue smiley face)

Please don't necrobump, especially solved threads. And don't empty post.
