To err is human... to really foul up requires the root password.

i'm thinking about making a pmt pkg for extra ... containing all apps from http://pmt.sourceforge.net/
what do you think about it?
(alternative would be to have 4 or 5 pkgs and a group of it)
The impossible missions are the only ones which succeed.

I think that I love dp
well I wouldn't make it a group, the package is afterall small and ships all-in-one

it does not ship as all-in-one ... that's why i'm asking
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile … up_id=1689
i agree, that making one pkg called pmt would be easier (with a "provides=('bmp2png' 'pngcrush' 'pngmeta')")
or does a all-in-one tarball exist somewhere?
The impossible missions are the only ones which succeed.

FYI - pngcrush 1.6.4 has been released.

Hi all.
Damir made the following post to the mailing list, and kindly asked to be posted here, too:

Subject: [arch] newpkg: pmt (pngcrush ++)
Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2006 23:50:19 +0200hi all,
i'd like to announce you a new pkg in [extra]. maybe you remember
pngcrush i had in my private repository some time ago:http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?p=170044#170044
i kept it up-to-date locally (but not on internet available to others
updated) and some time ago i made a pkg for all png/mng tools (=pmt)
and now i'm making it go to [extra] to be available to everybody.for those who have pngcrush stil installed, here the main changes:
pmt contains now pngcrush, pngmeta and bmp2png/png2bmp
if you are aware of any other png tools that may be useful for this
pkg, please inform me if you think that they may be interesting as an
extension to this pkg.please somebody make a post here about it:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?p=170044#170044
because somehow login does not work for me since long time for forums.greetings,
Damir

Hi,
I had to find this thread with google to find out that pngcrush is in the package pmt. Maybe put "pngcrush" in the description of the package so that it can be found with pacman -Ss pngcrush?

There's also OptiPNG in the AUR if you're looking for a similar application.

I tested all the PNG optimizer/recompression utilities I could find about a year ago and advdef gave the best lossless results, I highly recommended it. It's part of advancecomp (it also supports MNG among others).
If you ever want lossy compression pngnq works quite well, you'll need to pass the png(s) through advdef after for optimal file size.
Edit:
To compare I've compressed elasticdog's avatar with advdef and it went from 3,269B to 3,187B (it's not much but every bite counts).
I would love to know if any of the above utilities have improved enough to now beat advdef.

Good information N30N, I'll definitely look in to those next time I need PNG compression...out of curiosity, I used OptiPNG on my avatar and it went down to 3,208B, so closer, but not quite as good as advdef
