Hi,
I have a brand new arch install, and sound (ALSA) is working intermittently. On reboot, it might or might not detect my sound card, and I have to perform an alsaconf and reboot, until it works. This time however, it has been the 3rd time rebooting and still no luck. The thing is, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm on the latest kernel, and I can say its not a hardware issue because everything works perfect in gaydows.
Any idea?

Did you add your user to the audio group?
sudo gpasswd -a nonrootuser audio

it is added too. lets just say audio works fine sometimes, other times when it decides to not work, it'll simply not work.

Can you show lspci?

I had this phenomena sometimes, too. (snd_hda_intel)
Please try unloading and re-loading the kernel module and see if this fixes the problem. (modprobe -r snd_intel8x0; modprobe snd_intel8x0 Don't forget adjusting the volume afterwards.) For me, this restores reliably sound.
