UPDATE: screen flickers / blank screen - eeepc 1000HA

UPDATE: I found a thread (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=87635) that looks like it is about the exact same problem that I am having. Unfortunately, it seems as though people arrived at separate solutions and I don't know how to do some of the stuff they mentioned yet. Hopefully I will have enough time to tinker and get everything working over the weekend.

I've been using Ubuntu for a while and I finally decided to try out Arch today.

I didn't experience any problems until I started using xfce. I am not sure what triggers the crashes but the screen turns a solid color and I can't do anything but a hard reset. The only programs I have been using so far are chromium, pidgin, and the terminal.

I'm a bit new to this so if you need more information, please ask. I might have to ask you how to find it though. Here is some hardware info:

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I am using the xf86-video-intel drivers. My setup followed the beginner's guide more or less. There is also a problem with my screen flickering occasionally (possibly related?). I'm no 100% sure because it happens so fast but i think the desktop background appears above all my windows.

EDIT2: Happened again. This time, it happened as I was trying to start emacs on a remote server but it has happened under other circumstances.

EDIT3: I have tried openbox and dwm since I posted this and the problem persists so I am confident that it is not a problem with a specific desktop environment or window manager.
