Hello All
I have installed Arch and the KDE gui. All seems well except that I cannot use my keyboard at the KDE login. I have found suggestions to edit my xorg.conf file however when I drop out of the KDE login for console login and login as root I find an empty xorg.conf. The screen looks right and the mouse works but no keyboard and so no way of login to KDE. Can anyone help?
Also how do I get a grub setting that allows me the option of starting Arch and going straight in to a console without starting Xserver?
Thanks in advance

I'm sure there is a better way but I just generate a a config file with "Xorg -configure" and then move it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Hello
I could do that. I still do not understand why there is nothing there though when it all seems to work other than the keyboard. Reason for not doing the Xorg-configure was that I had added some custom entries for my SGI 1600sw monitor.

Is hal running?

How do I check if hal is running?

I have hal in my rd.conf so assumed it starts at boot

ps ax | grep hald
It should be running, though, else the mouse wouldn't work.
If you're starting X via inittab, you can add 3 to grub's kernel line to boot without starting X.

I get hald runner, hald addon input, etc. I think it is running.

I am wondering if I can get in before X starts will the xorg.conf file be intact? I tried adding 3 after ro and it took me right back in to the KDE login.

X doesn't change xorg.conf, it only reads it.
Are you starting X/kdm via inittab in runlevel 5, not rc.conf? Adding 3 to grub's kernel line should work in that case.
You can have a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, especially look (grep?) for lines with (EE) and hal.

If your keyboard has usb plug-in you should install (xfree86-)evdev.
Arch x86_64 ATI AMD APU KDE frameworks 5

Whatever I do, I always end up with something horribly mis-configured.

If there is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf that could be the problem. If you don't want to generate a new file then save your xorg.conf file somewhere and move it to /etc/x11/xorg.conf on boot.

Is everything working from hal even without an xorg.conf? I get to a KDE login screen with a working mouse.

I may be wrong BUT set dbus and hal in rc.conf (in theory hal should start dbus but it works better when dbus starts by itself) so first dbus then hal.
Next look for xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-keyboard. And that should do it

I have now managed to login to KDE. A minnor breakthrough because I am now confronted with the message.
Could not start D-Bus, Can you call qdbus?
Am I nearly there? Can anyone help me over this hurdle?
Thanks for all the advice so far, I am learning, although sometimes it just is not clear how a problem get solved.
