entrance doesn't start after today's update

Entrance begins but seems locked with the cross at the center of the screen.
I found in daemon.log:

1605 is the pid, but I couldn't write to /var/run/entrance/entranced.pid

When I start in a console and try to start with a /usr/sbin/entranced, it display the following error:

ERR:Ecore ecore_config_ipc_main.c:266 _ecore_config_ipc_init() _ecore_config_ipc_init: registered "_system"...

Am I the only one to have now problems with e17?

Re: entrance doesn't start after today's update

Entranced stopped working for me as well but with a different error. Something to do with the deamon spawning too fast. I'll look into that later. e17 however works fine for me. So perhaps you could try to start e17 without entrance? If that works you can at least continue working on your machine till your entrance problem is solved...

To start e17 without entrance:
Make a file called ".xinitrc" in your home directory

touch ~/.xinitrc

Add the e17 start script "exec enlightenment_start" to the file

echo 'exec enlightenment_start' >> ~/.xinitrc

And at last type "startx" in your terminal.

This should take you into your e17 and if not output some error message.
Hope that helps.

Re: entrance doesn't start after today's update

Thank you for your very kind answer.
In fact I can continue to work on xfce4 which starts without problem. I simply installed slim to avoid a "startxfce4" by hand in console.
Yesterday, after disabling entranced from rc.conf, I tried to start in a console and then to launch:

exec ck-launch-session enlightenment_start

But it ended by an error message.

I also tried to start enlightenment by slim with /etc/inittab and ~/.xinitrc but it failed too (and it works with xfce4)
That's why I changed my title in entrance & e17.

As it is my first problem with Archlinux, I don't know exactly what will happen now. Will there be a new update which fixes it in a few days? Is it necessary to report a bug?

you're on i686?

let me quickly fire entrance up this evening and I'll take a look.

what's the error e-svn gives you want you start it with startx/xinitrc?

[edit]
btw. usually there will only be an update if the problem is known, so next time file a bug report so we know it is broken. Though it is always good to see if it really is a bug on the forums before doing so.

Re: entrance doesn't start after today's update

Yes I have an i686.

I tried again to start with startx & .xinitrc to have the error message and this time... it started. I suppose I did something wrong yesterday when trying. Sorry...  I will correct the title of the post: entrance is the only one which has a problem for me.

Strange thing anyway: only three icons on my desktop are still there: three disk drive links; all the rest is present in the home/desktop/ but is not displayed on the desktop. Perhaps the start "by hand"?

I'll try to fix slim with enlightenment and all will be easy, but I hope to start with entrance again one day!

Thank you for your help.

Addendum edit:

For icons on desktop, it was a problem of names: /bureau (french name) & /desktop; I made a symbolic link and solved it, but the connection with the update is difficult to understand. An other problem appeared: no more applications in the menu. Is all this managed by entrance?

Re: entrance doesn't start after today's update

entrance has/should have no influence while e17 is running.

Applications not showing in the menu sounds as another issue to me. You could try to see if you sill have a menu by searching for "applications.menu".
If there is one in  /etc/xdg or in ~/.config

find /etc/xdg/ ~/.config/ -name '*applications.menu'

then the problem lies else where. If there isn't check if you have one lying around elsewhere

sudo updatedb && locate applications.menu

And link to it to see if that helps.

ln -s /path/to/menu /etx/xdg/menus/applications.menu

You might be able to use your xfce menu by making a copy of menu.xml and naming it applications.menu but i'm not sure if that will work.

sudo cp /etc/xdg/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml /etx/xdg/menus/applications.menu

Hope that helps...

Do note however that the newest e17 packages (16.999.063) seem to be less stable than the previous ones (16.999.062). I have crashes that I did not have before on both arch+e17 and ubuntu+e17 so it might be a rough ride till the next release smile

Re: entrance doesn't start after today's update

Same thing happened to me today. Entrance stopped working after a system update, though my real problem is I don't have an alternative way of booting my system.
Thus the question, is there a way to avoid starting entrance during boot? I know I could use a Live CD of any distribution but I would prefer a less time-intensive method if there is one. I didn't find any hints on how to boot into console on the fly, i.e. without changing any config files, or how to switch to a different console when I am stuck with a black screen, because entrance doesn't start properly. I tried Alt+F-anything, but it didn't work.
So if there is a way, I would really appreciate it if someone can help me with that!

add 'single' to the kernel line in grub (you can do this on the fly from the grub menu for one boot). It takes you into single user mode so you can stop entrance from starting from there.

On a sidenote...I'm without internet for probably some days so it may take a few days before I can investigate.

Re: entrance doesn't start after today's update

@crackhead

I am not sure but I think you simply need to press ctl-alt-F1 or F2 etc. Didn't you forget the ctl ?
After that, you remove entranced from rc.conf and you start in a console.

I remember I have read somewhere it is better not to use entranced in rc.conf but to start entrance with inittab & xinitrd; in this way, when x fails to start, you are directly in a console.

@FarmerF

Thank you for your help; I will try and I let you know the result!

Re: entrance doesn't start after today's update

No success at this point.

I had the same problem with menu on installation and what worked at that time was a:

cp /etc/xdg/menus/arch-applications.menu ~/.config/menus/applications.menu

Now I tried to erase the file in ./config and to copy again from arch-applications.menu, without success. I tried also to copy from xfce.applications.menu, with no success again. Neither with:

ln -s /etc/xdg/menus/arch-applications.menu ~/.config/menus/applications.menu

I can give you the results of the commands you gave me:

$ find /etc/xdg/ ~/.config/ -name '*applications.menu'
/etc/xdg/menus/arch-applications.menu
/etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu
/etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu
/home/jd/.config/menus/applications.menu
$ sudo updatedb && locate applications.menu
/etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu
/etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu.old
/etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu.oldlink
/etc/xdg/menus/arch-applications.menu
/etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu
/home/jd/.config/menus/applications.menu
/home/jd/.config/menus/applications.menu.old
/home/jd/.config/menus/applications.menu.sav

I don't have a /etc/xdg/xfce4/desktop:

$ ls /etc/xdg/xfce4/
helpers.rc  mount.rc  panel  xfconf  Xft.xrdb  xinitrc

Re: entrance doesn't start after today's update

Well I think this go around just had some bad builds. I just rebuilt the packages using abs and all is fine... I believe the main culprit is the builds up to evas just a guess though as for some reason even though My abs built version is newer it keeps wanting to install the one from the repository and If I do Entrance goes back to being stupid...

Anyway My build\Install order for anyone interested is this...
eina-svn, eet-svn, evas-svn, ecore-svn, e_dbus-svn, embryo-svn, edje-svn, efreet-svn, exml-svn, emprint-svn, e-svn, e-modules-extra-svn, entrance-svn

Never have been able to build esmart It always errors out, but whatever version is in the repository it always seems to work fine after a rebuild.

@jdn06
You could try to backup your enlightenment config dir (.e) and remove it. When e starts it might generate a new menu as well... But i'm not sure about that. Afraid that I cant help you much further... Hope you find a solution smile

Re: entrance doesn't start after today's update

I was offline on holidays for a few days.
Back home, I tried to update and saw a new version of entrance. I tried it and the problem is not the same, but it didn't work better.
I can write my login and pass and choose my session, it starts... and comes back to login. I tried by using xinittab or by adding entranced in rc.conf; same result.

Here is the log:

The directory /var/run/entrance/ is empty after reboot; I don't know what is this /var/run/entrance/entrance_ipc_1501 file.

Has anyone an idea about this new variant of the entrance problem?

@FarmerF
Thank you for your advice; I did it and it worked, but I had naturally to remake all my personal adjustments of the racks.
