Hi,
Since a few days I've got some problems with WoW.
About 10 mn after the first game launch, it begins to freeze every 5 - 10 seconds.
The game ran smoothly before, I can't remember if it began just after a particuliar update.
So far I've tried :
- Turning it off and on again
- Everything the wiki said : http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/World_of_Warcraft
- Reducing all the options to minimal settings
- Deleting the cache directory of the game
- Turning off all the add-ons
- Running it in a minimal environnement (Openbox with literally nothing else)
- Disabling KMS
When I launch the game I've got this message :
err:winediag:X11DRV_WineGL_InitOpenglInfo Direct rendering is disabled, most likely your OpenGL drivers haven't been installed correctly
But since GLXinfo tells me that everything is OK and other games (such as Quake Live) run fine, I assumed that it was only Wine being silly.
Here is my hardware :
Dell Vostro 1520
Intel 4500MHD
Archlinux 64bits
It's not really a big problem, but it's frustrating when you play with friends and they tell you to "just install windows and stop using weird softwares"
PS : Sorry about my English, it's (obviously) not my mother language

I got rid of the error message by installing the 32bits Intel Mesa libs, but the freezes are still here
It happens in both fullscreen and windowed mode, and disabling pixel & vertex shaders didn't help

Did you try "wine Wow.exe -opengl" to launch WoW ?

Yes, I'm using "wine Wow.exe -opengl -nosound"
I also got the SET gxApi "opengl" line in config.wtf
I just noticed a weird thing: when I minimize the game for like 15-20mn, the freezes stop for about 5 minutes when I maximize it again (in both windowed and fullscreen mode)

This may not help too much, but running WoW with the same graphics card and I couldn't even play with opengl mode; would crash after loading my character. I ended up using Direct3D mode, but would stutter every couple seconds until I switched the offscreenrendering mode to backbuffer instead of the default fbo (there's a regedit key, but I used winetricks to do it for me) perhaps that would work for you?
Have you tried it in direct3d mode? I know it doesn't get as many fps, but could work if the above didn't
oh and PS, in direct3d there is some graphical glitches that can be fixed by disabling GL shader language use by d3d (another regedit key I set with winetricks...)

Same thing here. Does it also happen to you that during the freeze times, window manager is unable to create other windows? I'm using Awesome here. I think we can suspect of Wine too, it never happens to me if WoW is not running...

Uuh.. I run it on x86_64, and I've no problem at all, it runs perfectly

Have you tried to reset all the world of warcraft configs?, you can do it renaming the 'wtf' folder in your install directory.
Yes, i know my english sucks xD.
I know my english sucks

In D3D mode last time I checked it was absolutely unplayable (black background, missing objects, hardly 1fps...)
But I haven't really tried any tweaks to improve this, so maybe I could give it a shot

I'm using KDE4. I never noticed that, I'll check...
However, I did notice that the scrolling in web browsers (firefox or chromium) was freezing as well. Other things such as music playing or file copying seem unconcerned by the freezes.
It could be wine, but with other games I never had any freezes.
Edit : Yeah, I can't create other windows during the freeze times. Resizing works OK though

Yes, didn't change a thing
Thanks for your help guys

@atropos: Do you by any chance use chromium? It may sound unrelated and weird, but I am not having locks if my browser is not open
Offline
I do use chromium, but I tried with the browser closed and it kept on freezing.
In fact, I tried with a minimal desktop (openbox with nothing else running), and I still had these freezes
Offline
I have not had freezes with chromium closed for 3 days, I may just be lucky, but as soon as I open chromium I start having them back

Well I tried the Direct3d mode by putting gxApi "d3d9" in Config.wtf and launching the game by "wine Wow.exe -d3d9"
The good news is: no more freezes And the Hardware Cursor works (I never noticed it before, but it's really handy)
Bad news is: it's extra slow. 8 fps in 1440x900, 11 fps in 800x600, low details.
I know my graphic card isn't really good, and I could play with 8 fps (way better than having those freezes ), but if you know some way to improve the fps or get rid of the freezes in Opengl...

try changing powermizer setting from adaptive to performance
Offline
Thanks for your reply but powermizer seems to be a Nvidia tool and I have a Intel video card
BTW since some updates (couldn't tell exactly which ones - might be a WoW patch or a new version of the Intel drivers) D3D works better (~20fps) but OpenGL gives me an Error 132 when I launch the game. I tried the Blizzard FAQ concerning this error but it's still here. Not a big deal though now that D3D runs fine.
Before these updates, I've noticed that the freezes were shorter when I disabled Pixel Shaders in Winecfg, if it can help somebody...
