Mplayer 30519-1 upgrade, broke SMplayer (Arch x86_64)

Greetings!

The mplayer package has been updated today to version 30519-1 , but unfortunately it has broken the current version of smplayer.
By broken I mean that there is no video image, just sound and an empty window frame.

here is the log from mplayer when im trying to play a video file using smplayer:

Are you sure that mplayer is installed and defined in Smplayer settings ? (/usr/bin/mplayer)

Do you encounter the same behaviour on ALL the videos ? What's your video settings (gfx card, gfx driver) ? Your output video overlay ? (Xv, Gl, VDPAU ?)

Hello again! I apologize for taking me a while to post back.

I was trying to figure out what the problem was...but i hit a wall unfortunately hmm

I've tried everything i can plus the 2 suggestions mentioned here about trying with different video output overlays and different files but still no luck.

Here is an image of how the smplayer window looks like after the upgrade:

when the video starts playing that small logo in the middle disappears and im left with a trasparent window... although the sound works fine, as well as the mplayer as a standalone player... the issue is with smplayer.

Any suggestions please or any other info I can provide you with?

@ flamelab:

gfx card : nvidia 9800GTX+
gfx driver: nvidia driver version 190.53
output video overlay : Xv as my default, but i also tried with gl and vdpau

vdpau is working on your card. btw this happens on every video files or only for some? maybe there is a bug in mplayer using some decoder.

This happens with every file with the exception of a few .mkv files using vdpau where I can see the video but it is almost trasparent!!!

I really can't understand what is going on. The only thing certain is that this occured right after the mplayer upgrade without having changed aything else on my system...

what can you do is to downgrade mplayer or join #mplayer@freenode and ask for details. they should know better if is a bug in svn or not. another thing is to checkout again from svn and make a tarball and use the new revision in mplayer PKBUILD

unfortunately I can't downgrade since i wrecklessly did a pacman -Sc  ... i'll give the irc node atry and if no one can help em there I'll give it a shot by rebuilding from svn.

yes! as I mentioned above, mplayer works fine by it self. smplayer on the other hand...:/

i'll downgrade from now since this version is breaking x264 encoding.

Hello again!

I've finaly located the source of the problem. The problem was caused by the Cairo-Dock application when i was running it with gl support.

I temporally turned off compositing by switching from compiz to metacity just for the sake of experementing and ...voila! smplayer was working again!

So after abit of searching i discovered that if I disable cairo-dock or start it without gl support, smplayer was working just fine.

So with great sorrow i uninstalled cairo-dock and went back to awn. The weird thing is that i've been using this dock for a couple of months now but never had any problem of that nature.

I'm glad that it is not a more general problem with compositing on my desktop but I 'm really curious to find out about the reason for that "incompatibility" between those 2 applications.

So, I guess it is PROBLEM SOLVED for now, but any input with a possible explaination about my problem would be much appreciated guys!

I think you ought to use VDPAU instead of Gl, it's more advanced in terms of video playback.

VDPAU is much more prefferable than Xv or any other output. You can use the mplayer-vdpau-svn from AUR or add the adslgr32/64 repos with have regular mplayer (with vdpau support) updates: http://gitorious.org/arch-linux-greece
