I had the same error as the guy in this thread:

Which he resolved (post #7) by copying the my.cnf to /etc/
I just ran:
cp /etc/mysql/my.cnf /etc/mysql/my.confAnd immediately my problem went away.
I thought most config files end in .conf and changing it to that made things work...
Is the mysql package just installing it wrong, or what?
