Normal user can't mount drives and root login fails when using SLiM

Sorry if this is the wrong spot for this.  I'm a complete Arch newb on my first install and would pull my hair out if I wasn't already bald smile

Ok first off if I start any of my installed Desktop Environments as a normal user I can't mount drives.  CD, usb, other HDDs all return an error like this:

Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.14" (uid=1000 pid=1974 comm="exo-mount) interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member="Mount" error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0 pid=1699 comm="/usr/sbin/hald)
Here's the list of groups the user in question is added to:

disk lp wheel video audio optical storage power users lister

If the DE is started as root everything is happy.

Second, When I run SLiM normal user login is perfect, but if I try and login as root I get an error: "Unable to Execute login command"

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Lister

Re: Normal user can't mount drives and root login fails when using SLiM

What do you have in .xinitrc.  In order for auto mounting to work properly you normally need something like, for example:

exec ck-launch-session gnome-session

You also need to make sure you have an .xinitrc for your root user as well.  since no user has a DE or WM built-in to the user.  What Loafer said about the ck-launch will help with auto mounting.  Also maybe look at adding your user to the optical and storage groups?

Usually graphical login is disabled for root (this is the case for GDM at least). You can try to login as root on tty1 and than issue the startx command.

Logging in as root is not needed and it's insecure. Don't do it. Log in as a normal user and use su/sudo as needed instead.
What loafer said will most likely solve your problem.
