Unable to get 1920x1080 resolution [Solved]

I am trying out a Philips 24" LCD monitor, capable of 1920x1080 at 60Hz. My graphics card is an nVidia FX-5600DT and I am using the nvidia-173xx driver. At present I can only get 1280x1024.

Here is my xrandr output:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024
default connected 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1280x1024 50.0*
   1280x960 51.0
   1024x768 52.0
   896x672 53.0
   800x600 54.0 55.0
   640x512 56.0
   640x480 57.0 58.0
   512x384 59.0
   400x300 60.0
   320x240 61.0

Here is my xorg.conf file where I have attempted to force 1920x1080:

have you tried using the nvidia-settings program to do the work?

Yes, and the max resolution shown there is 1280x1024, so cannot get the resolution any better via that method.

How is the monitor connected: DVI or VGA?

Try connecting it using the VGA connector.

Re: Unable to get 1920x1080 resolution [Solved]

Connected via DVI, using VGA I get only 2/3 of the screen active at 1280x1024.

Update: I attempted to add 1920x1080 mode using xrandr but could not switch to that mode. I am beginning to suspect the video card (FX-5600DT is not capable of that resolution. Am I out to lunch on that one?

Re: Unable to get 1920x1080 resolution [Solved]

Maybe under "Screen" put a virtual resolution, like:

SubSection "Display"
                Viewport 0 0
                Depth 24
                Modes "1280x1024"
                Virtual 1920 1080

Sorry if you tried this already or isn't what you want. I just remember having this issue on a desktop I used to have (although I no longer have it), and had nVidia graphics that for some reason wouldn't allow the resolution I wanted so I plugged in Virtual and it worked. Probably not the most elegant ways to achieve it but it worked for me and I didn't see any problems. Anyway, worth a try. hmm

Re: Unable to get 1920x1080 resolution [Solved]

OK. I am going to mark this solved. The errors given me by the Xorg log and xrandr made me suspect the video card (FX-5600 DT). I went to the nVidia forums and sure enough, that card can do 1920x1080, but only using the VGA port not the DVI port. It is only good to 1600 res on the DVI port. Thanks anyways to all the above suggestions. Now that I am using an analog VGA cable I get full 1920x1080 resolution.
