Hello, I go to the forum to ask something that caught my attention.
On my system the following packages are installed:
1)
policykit-gnome-0.9.2-5
policykit-0.9-9
and 2)
polkit-gnome 0.96-1
polkit 0.96-1
I assume this occurred in an update, can I delete "1)" quietly? Or are they simply two different packages with similar names?

policykit is deprecated. You can safely remove it.

thanks Pierre
Now I wonder if anyone knows, why if this package is deprecated, pacman never warned me of this situation, or not published on the news site, etc ...
This leads me to wonder if I have more deprecated packages installed on my system.

pacman -Qm. Besides listing packages you installed from AUR, you can also use it to find such depreciated packages.

When trying to remove policykit, pacman gives this error:
sudo pacman -Rns policykit

Do you want to remove these packages? [Y/n] y

I can confirm this.
Should I file a bug for pacman, or polkit? (since policykit is deprecated and Flyspray states that deprecated packages should not get bug reports)

I think you can file a bug report and ask that there should be a replaces line added to the new versions.

Bug reported:

Go vote for it =-)
Also:
policykit is removed from my system... despite the error message from pacman.

The error is harmless, as it involves removing the policykit user and group. The userdel command removes the group also, so the groupdel command will fail. Someone filed a bug for this, but I closed it without a fix since policykit would die in a few days anyways.

Thank you for the clarification!

what about polkit-1 is that replacing polkit?

Sorry to bump this thread, but upgrading to polkit broke HAL.
Now I'm running both policykit and polkit, to fix HAL, but that can't really be the best solution.

Care to elaborate?
How did HAL break? Does it fail to start?
When the upgrade from policikit to polkit happened on my system everything kept working just fine.
Maybe with a bit more info we can give you a hand.

HAL failed to start at boot, and failed starting when using /etc/rc.d/hal or hald. The breakage was "fixed" by reinstalling policykit, and keeping polkit as well.
This morning I performed another pacman -Syu, and it wanted to replace policykit - again. I went with it, and now everything seems to be back to normal, without policykit. Note that this time I got the same error message as above, which I didn't get the first time.
